Problem:

Error: "The 'MAPI Session Handle' of the Novell GroupWise 'Object Request Broker' could not be accessed. The address book cannot run (error status: 0x80004005)."

Suggested solutions from TID 10008334:

  1. Uninstall Windows messaging.
  2. Uninstall GroupWise using GWCA55US.EXE
  3. Uninstall Microsoft Outlook.
  4. Reinstall windows messaging and reinstall GroupWise.

Another solution is to delete the following registry key: and reinstall the GroupWise client.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise\Address Book - User Interface

Another solution is rename mapi32.dll to mapi32.dl_ , then reinstall GW65

HOWEVER this does not always solve the problem.

Try the following solution:

Copy the mapi32.dll from the GroupWise installation past and overwrite the local machine copy in c:\winnt.0\system32 (substitute winnt.0 with your local windows directory).

Run GroupWise, then access the Address Book. Sometimes this will come up empty. Simply run the GroupWise 5.5 plugin for Outlook Setup (make sure GroupWise is closed) then open GroupWise and Address Book.

Now everything should work OK.

  • How can it be a solution to uninstall outlook to get groupwise to run? What shall I do about outlook then when needed?
  • I did not need to uninstall anything but the GroupWise client (6.5 in my case); renaming mapi32.dll to mapi32.dl_ took care of the problem (I always try what looks easiest first! ;>) ). I have Outlook Express rather than Outlook, don't know if that makes any difference.
