After upgrading to SUSE Linux Professional 9.2, grub hangs with geom error. With SUSE Linux Professional 9.0 everything was perfect.
On a big harddisk, the new kernel was stored beyond the 128 GB limit of the bios (the partition ranged from 64GB to 160GB). Copying some old files to a new location and removing the old ones freed disk space at the beginning of the partition. Copying the kernel once more used the new free space there, allowing grub to generate appropriate boot environment.
