List of reasons why you might install more than one Inventory database, i.e. at leaf or intermediate servers.

  1. Because you want to run reports on the subset of the data that that database holds, on a regular basis, and having a separate database simplifies this. END OF LIST.

There are no other good reasons for putting a database on your leaf and intermediate servers: roll-up does not involve the database, only the STR files, which get zipped up, and passed to the next server in the chain.

Many people have installed databases that they don't need, because they mistakenly believe that they have to have a database on each server, or that the database is involved in the roll-up process.

If you've fallen into this trap, don't worry, there is a simple way to spare your blushes: just follow the steps in the documentation to change the role of the Inventory Server to, for example, amend the server from "Intermediate Server with Database" to "Intermediate Server" - if you're running the Sybase database, ensure that the load of the database (MGMTDBS.NCF) is commented out in AUTOEXEC.NCF, and you can then delete [ZENworks install volume]:\zenworks\database.
