Issue:

Novell Linux Desktop or SUSE Linux Professional 9.2 firewall settings may interfere with Windows system printer sharing.

Solution:

  1. Turn off Novell/SUSE firewall using YaST2 (if behind a router-firewall with internet access or on a standalone network without internet).
  2. Install new printer by starting YaST2 and then going to Hardware | Printer | Other (not detected) | Configure | Other kind of setup | other printer.
  3. Put in the url in the following format:

    uri=smb://<user>:<passwrd>@<servername>/<printername>"

  4. Name your printer.
  5. Select make and model.
  6. Now test your setup.
  7. You will have to have a user name and password on the Windows machine with the printer attached -- this can be done through the Windows "control panel-users".
