Many users have reported problems when installing NSS on an Open Enterprise Server (OES) in a VMWare virtual machine. The problem is manifested when following the instructions for installing EVMS as the partition manager, located at http://www.novell.com/documentation/oes/install_linux/data/bu4x508.html.
When NSS configuration tries to start NSS, the nsscomn.ko module freezes the system. The problem seems to occur on machines with hyperthreading capable processors. OES installs the smp kernel and the problem occurs.
The problem is most likely a bug.
To keep the problem from occurring, change the installed kernel from kernel-smp to kernel-default during installation. An alternate way to solve the problem is to disable hyperthreading so the single processor kernel is installed.
