The easiest way is to open a terminal and type glxinfo | grep render and then look to see whether the direct rendering says yes or no. If it says yes then it it enabled, if it says no then it is not enabled.
Another option that will give you a little more information is using the 3Ddiag command. This can be done by opening a terminal and typing 3Ddiag and then reading the output. This will do an extensive test and you should be able to see any failures that occur.
