Sometimes your GroupWise users communicate frequently with specific email resipients or Internet Domains. The GWIA will perform a DNS lookup for the MX record of the recipient's domain each time a message is sent. You can speed up the performance of the Internet Agent, by instructing it to use 'hardcoded' IP address for given domains.

The solution is very simple.

  1. Create a file, called route.cfg in the GWIA's gateway folder (usually under <DOMAIN>\GWIA).

  2. Open the file in a text editor and enter the IP address of the SMTP server (MX record) for each of the domains in your frequent recipients list. Example of the file is shown below.

  3. Save it and restart GWIA.

Note that the second line contains a 'fake' domain. This is useful, if you have another email system in your network, and you want GWIA to send email directly to it.

This is a 'cool solution', BUT - be aware. MX records can change and do change. So, if you use it - check the MX records of the routed domains frequently. You can get a list of these MS records automatically, by using NSLookup, called with an input file. But.. this will come in next tip :)
