When certificates used for securing web services expire, those services can be disrupted at a time when it is least expected. With certificate expirations tending to be set years in advance of the actual expiration date, it is possible that the person who created the certificate is no longer responsible for managing the systems involved. If the certificate is an external certificate, it can take time to get a certificate signing request processed, leading to undesired downtime for the service.
See this TID:
for information about how to query the directory for certificate expiration information.
