Novell offers special pricing for customers that are going to use SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) in the context of a High Performance Compute cluster (HPC).
The code that ships with the purchase of "Basic, Standard or Priority" SLES is identical to the code that ships with an HPC SLES. Novell is simply offering better pricing due to the unique usage of SLES in the HPC context. The media kit that is available for free download, or purchase (US$35.00), is the same for all usages of SLES. The Novell eLicenses, and their pricing, are unique to each version of SLES based on the support that may or may not be bundled with it or the HPC usage.
When purchasing HPC SLES from Novell, it will always be a two part purchase that will include "head" nodes and "compute" nodes eLicenses. Head nodes are sold at the same price as SLES Basic. Compute nodes of SLES enjoy a substantial discount.
In order to qualify for HPC SLES pricing, one must purchase a minimum of 9 units of SLES. Also the following must be true:
- Use of the SLES in a High Performance Compute cluster
- The purchase of at least one Basic SLES eLicense as the head node
- The purchase of at least 8 units of HPC SLES eLicenses to be used in an HPC
HPC SLES pricing is only available through selected resellers. The reseller must either be a Novell Solution Provider at the Silver level or better, or the Novell reseller must be a Novell OEM partner.
