Problem

A Forum reader recently asked:

"Way back when ... (ver 5.2?) a user wrote: 'I work in a project-based environment. Activities usually begin and end in 6 months to a year. I create a cabinet drawer (folder) for each activity and store all e-mails relating to that activity, until the end. Once the activity is over, I'd like to download all the old e-mails to disk and put the disk in the file for future reference, audits, etc. But no one can tell me how to do this.'

One of my users came up to me today and asked me this very question (he came from an Outlook shop).

The answer to the question - way back when - was to use the GroupWise archive feature by specifying the location of an archive directory in the Archive Directory text box.

By now, with ver 7.0.1, there must be a more eloquent way of performing this task and on a more regular/daily schedule. Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution?"

And here's the response from Tim Heywood ...

Solution

There is a handy little tool on Source.forge for this:

http://developer.novell.com/wiki/index.php/Mailsaver

It's MailSaver for GroupWise from DeveloperNet. MailSaver is a tool that lets GroupWise users take messages that have been filed in folders within GroupWise, and save them in bulk to simple text files on disk. It can handle a complete folder all at once, including attachments.

MailSaver is a plug-in (c3po) for the Windows GroupWise client. It uses the GroupWise Object API to extract messages from folders in GroupWise and save them as text files on disk. The messages are saved with customizable names that can include the sender, recipient, date, and subject. It extends the pop-up menu on folders in the GroupWise client to provide a user interface using the GroupWise c3po API.
