Problem

We often have problems with GroupWise 7 reporting that it is not installed properly, or a user does not have any address books visible in Addresses. Reinstalling GroupWise under an admin account seems to fix this for the admin, but the normal user still has problems when they load it. GroupWise displays a message saying it is not properly installed, even though it has just been reinstalled.

Solution

The problem appears to be in corrupt registry entries for that user.

Deleting the following registry key seems to fix the problem:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Novell GroupWise

Also, it may be useful to delete the following entries if problems still occur:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\Spell Checker
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\User Word List

If the user affected is not an administrator and has regedit blocked by group policies, there are two ways that these entries can be deleted.

A: Using Regedit Silently

1. Using REGEDIT4, create a file named "fixGW7.reg" as follows:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles]
"DefaultProfile"=-
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Novell GroupWise]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\Spell Checker]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\User Word List]

2. Run "regedit /s fixGW7.reg" to delete the registry entries.

B: Mounting the User's Registry File and Manually Editing It

1. Open regedit.

2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

3. From the File menu select Load Hive.

4. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\NTUSER.DAT and load it (This is a hidden file, so you will need to have "show hidden files" enabled to see it.)

5. Give it a name (usually the user's name), then browse to the relative locations above. For example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Username\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Novell GroupWise

6. Delete the keys, as above.

Example

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles]
"DefaultProfile"=-

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Novell GroupWise]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\GroupWise]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\Spell Checker]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Novell\User Word List]

Environment

  • Groupwise 7.0, 7.0.1
  • Windows XP SP2
  • Novell Client 4.91 SP3
