Here's an idea from Trevor in Canada, in response to several musings about a way to easily detect the difference between a desktop and a laptop.
Try this Reg Key to detect the difference in Windows NT
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE${BS}SYSTEM${BS} CurrentControlSet${BS} Services${BS}Pcmcia
Binary Value --> Start
If value is 0 then it's a laptop.
If value is 4 then it's a desktop.
