Problem:
Windows 2000 doesn't accept anything but a hub (no cross-over cable etc.) to enable the network connection.
This is especially annoying when trying to run a bridged VMware configuration on one laptop with W2K as the host.
Solution: use linux as your vmware host!
or do the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
Add the following registry value:
Value Name: DisableDHCPMediaSense
Data Type: REG_DWORD -Boolean
Value Data: 1 (True)
The disconnected sign will still be shown but the network connection is now active.
