I read your recent excerpt on the purpose of Read-Only Replicas and think you've left out an important role that they may play. This was actually suggested to me by a Novell Engineer on a support call while we were fixing some other issues and waiting for updates to take place, so I can't take too much credit.
If you have a WAN with servers in different locations you may be replicating across the WAN to provide fault tolerance, however, you obviously don't want users to login across the WAN to non local replicas. The Cool Solution is to have Read-Only Replicas in remote locations that will provide fault tolerance but not honor logins, thereby forcing clients to only login to the local replica.
