Novell Cool Solutions: Tip

We've gone dot crazy in this "era of the dot-com" and some corporate naming conventions require a dot in just about everything. Here's a question that is being asked more often in the forums: "Is there any way in eDirectory to make my eDirectory username= firstname.lastname?"
firstname.lastname is a legal construct in eDirectory. It is most often seen in environments where LDAP is used exclusively to access information in the directory.
If you are using the normal management utilities, you will have to use an escape character to reference the object (i.e. jim\.wells or frank\.jameson). This is also true in using the Novell Client to log in to the network.
It should be noted that some applications will not like the name with the period in it (OnDemand is one in particular).
