You can have the best of both worlds using the DC naming convention by adding the auxiliary class dcObject to an Organization and/or Organizational unit.

This way NCP/NDS will see the object as a regular O/OU and LDAP/DirXML can use it as a DC.

You have to do a modrdn to change the naming attribute. Below is an LDIF file used to change ou=abc,o=com to dc=abc,dc=com.

The good thing is because it is an Aux class the objectclass organization/organizational unit still holds so all snapins will work in ConsoleOne.

#
# change o=com to dc=com
#
dn: o=com
changetype: modify
add: objectClass
objectClass: dcObject
-
add: dc
dc: com

dn: o=com
changetype: modrdn
newrdn: dc=com
deleteoldrdn: 0
#
# change ou=abc,dc=com to dc=abc,dc=com
#
dn: ou=abc,dc=com
changetype: modify
add: objectClass
objectClass: dcObject
-
add: dc
dc: abc

dn: ou=abc,dc=com
changetype: modrdn
newrdn: dc=abc
deleteoldrdn: 0
