We have been upgrading NetWare 5.1 servers with DS 7.60a to eDirectory 8.6.2 and the process has been working well, except that when the Java GUI starts and begins to copy the eDirectory files to the server, the process takes close to an hour - even on machines with more than 1GB of RAM with no services running. Is there a way to speed up this process?
The process is slow because of the number of compressed files that are being replaced. Try manually running an Anti-Virus scanner on the server's SYS volume twice to decompress all the files before the install.
We did a DS upgrade with NetWare 5.1 and the performance problem was definitely due to file compression. Our install time went from about 45 minutes to about 5 minutes after decompressing the files.
Here are a couple of things we learned along the way.
You don't have to decompress the entire volume; we only did the following three directories.
sys:java sys:public\mgmt\consoleone sys:system\imanager
We changed the following two set commands so we only had to access the file once, rather then twice and so it would not recompress prior to us being ready.
Set Enable File Compression=off Set convert compressed to uncompressed option=2
A virus scan is very thorough, it even opens up all zip files and looks at each file within it. A faster method is to just do a Windows find on a file named *.* containing "junk".
