Several readers have reported some problems using NICE with a custom install, or when trying to use modems that aren't part of the default assortment shipped with NetWare. Well, check this out. Two of the NSBS engineers with soft spots in their hearts for customers, have worked a little magic. Daniel Shelley has updated ISPWIZ, and Cliff Ross has updated the DHCPCFG5.NLM, so they won't trip you up anymore. That's what we call NICE.

Updated March 24, 2000:
Important: This tip only applies to NSBS 5.0. If you try applying the updated files to NWSB 4.2 it will break NICE among other things. These files should NOT be applied to anything but a 5.0 server.

Problem 1

When running NICE the following error occurs: "Error: DNIP:....." and the server fails to get configured. Another symptom of the same problem is related to DHCPCFG5.nlm. When DHCPCFG5.nlm runs during the last part of the installation there is an error.

The cause of this problem is an "unusual" tree structure defined during a custom install. To test it, go to the server console and type "DHCPCFG5." You will either get an error saying that the DHCP Server object exists (which means that everything is fine), or you will get an error that says something about not being able to find the DHCP object.

Solution: Put the updated DHCPCFG5.NLM in SYS:System\ and the update to ispwiz.exe in SYS:Public\. Go to the server console and type DHCPCFG5. You should get a message telling you that the server was configured correctly. You can then go ahead and use NICE as documented without running into errors.

Problem 2

NICE uses a static/predefined modem list, and if your modem is not part of this list, you have to go get the NetWare driver from your modem vendor and put it on your server. How do you get NICE to list that modem as one of your options in the modem list?

Solution: Put the updated version of ispwiz.exe in SYS:Public\. NICE will now use the modem files on the server to create its list of modems.

Download the new files.
