All businesses require accounting to maintain control of their finances. Each business is different in its accounting complexity and needs so it is difficult to pinpoint the best kind of accounting practice for any size of company without a careful analysis of a specific business's current and future needs. A very small business (small in number of employees) might have very sophisticated accounting requirements and employ either internal or external accounting professionals. We have spoken with businesses of all sizes that use either internal staff to maintain their books or external companies that are outsourced. There isn't a "one-size-fits-all" approach to your business's accounting needs.

When you are deciding how best to handle the books for your business, we strongly suggest talking with accounting experts, either locally or on the Internet, to determine what would best address your needs.

Two of the accounting software industry leaders in the US are Great Plains and Intuit. Both have excellent accounting solutions for small and growing businesses. You can find more information at:

Great Plains

Intuit

In addition, you can ask business questions from the Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) This is a group with chapters in each state that is ready to answer questions with real life experience. Check out the SCORE website.

Besides SCORE, there is the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) website with a wealth if information on starting a business.

Have any of you used these resources? Let us know if they have been helpful to you in your business. Also, if you have other favorite Small Biz websites, let us know.
