If you have an itchy trigger finger when it comes to deleting email, you may feel some sympathy for JoAnn, who recently wrote:

"I don't know how I did it, but I placed all of my incoming mail in the "trash" and I don't know how to send them back to the mailbox. I did not intend to trash or delete any of them, yet."

We especially like the "yet" at the end of the sentence. She's admirably uncommitted to maintaining every piece of incoming mail in her mailbox. Anyway, if you've accidentally thrown away something good, you should know there's an easy way to reach your hand into the trash bin and pull it out. In GroupWise, we call this Undeleting.

  1. In your Folder List, click the little Trash can. This will open your Trash folder, which contains all the coffee grounds, egg shells, and email that you've deleted.
  2. Select the items you want to undelete.
(If you, like JoAnn, accidentally deleted a whole bunch of email at once, you'll want to undelete them en masse. To do that, click the first one in the list that you want to undelete, scroll down and press Shift while clicking the last one in the list you want to undelete. Voila, everything in between will be highlighted.)
  3. Click Edit > Undelete.

The undeleted item(s) are placed in the folder from which they were originally deleted (in JoAnn's case, right back in her Mailbox, as if nothing had ever happened). If the original folder no longer exists, the item is placed in your Mailbox.

Now here's the important thing to remember: If the Trash has been Emptied, it's gone forever. Now some hyper-tidy folks routinely empty their trash by right-clicking the little Trash can and choosing Empty Trash. This permanently removes it from the GroupWise system, and frees up space on the server.

But not everyone remembers to Empty their Trash regularly, so there are some automations that may be in place that do it for you. Items in the Trash are emptied according to the days entered in the Cleanup tab in Environment Options. The system administrator has additional ways to specify that your Trash is emptied automatically on a regular basis. In any case, you should hurry out and retrieve the goods from your Trash can before they are gone forever to the great landfill in the sky.
