    Details

This tool is primarily designed to help network administrators to quickly and safely rename multiple User objects in the NDS tree using Given Name and Surname attributes, in order to comply with new corporate naming standards.

It has been evolving to expand on its functionality so that to provide a high level of customization for specific needs of virtually any organization.

The following enhancements have been implemented in the recent versions:

    • a new name pattern for user IDs, or Common Names (CNs), can be either selected from the predetermined set of the most commonly used patterns or composed in a granular fashion to comply with virtually any naming requirements
    • home file directories can also be automatically renamed to match new IDs
    • Home Directory attributes can be populated or modified based on the current user IDs along with required server volume and common root directory
    • creation of user alias objects in a specified target container
    • Wizard mode for ease of configuration

Configuration of the utility is self-evident and does not require any specific instructions.

All statistics pertaining to performed operations and encountered issues is always recorded into the log file for subsequent reference and analysis.

Ambiguous situations like duplicate names, incorrect symbols found in the Surname and Given Name attributes, and some other possible inconsistencies are handled by leaving user objects in question intact, i.e. without making any modifications to them, and reporting such conflicts into the log file, as well as onto the screen if unattended mode is not enabled (default).

In the evaluation mode, the program will process only the first 20 user objects as the preset maximum. To enable its full functionality, a license file individual for each NDS tree needs to be obtained from the owner.

    • How about doing this in eDirectory running in Linux/Windows environment ?
    • Dang !.. when I was badly looking for the utility like this there was literally nothing, even with similar functionality ! Although we had a relatively small number of user objects, slightly over 400, it took two of us here nearly the whole Saturday to rename them all. You can imagine how "creative and interesting" was that kind of work. On top of that, we "enjoyed" a real fun next Monday when more than 30 end users began nailing us down for incorrect new user IDs, - no wonder that we'd mistyped some, it could have been worse... Not sure how well this utility works in large trees as I just tried it in a small test container and found it's doing a great job !
    • Exactly what we need. And the beauty of it - exactly when we need it the most ! Well, now is the time to convince the ITS manager that this would be well spent money if to compare with the overtime compensation and very likely headache in the case of renaming user accounts manually...
    • In short, a utility that is based on a good idea. However, is sort of limited from the customuzation point of view. Contacted the maker of this tool. The good news is that the GUI version with additional features will be available by late spring or in summer time frame.
    • It would be real cool if this tool could also allow for renaming home directories.
    • Being a long-time user of the Cool Solutions community, I can say with no doubt this utility deserves the highest rank for what it does and how it does that. And it DOES allow for syncing home directories names and attributes with new user names !
    • Well done !
    • This is a big helper ! It saved us here plenty of time and perhaps some trouble too had we decide to go either do-it-manually or via ICE/LDAP import/export route. In short, a great value for the bug spent.
