Retaining personal data and user preferences when doing a clean Linux install
Create a separate partition for /home.
Next time you reinstall (to upgrade presumably), identify the partition as /home with the partition layout tool, but don't format it.
User files and preferences will all stay intact (assuming the same login name is used), allowing for relatively seamless upgrades.
