Prakash Sakya, Australia, sent another solution to distributing the Printers icon to a locked down desktop. He has been using Novell Application Launcher since Ver 1.1 and says they do almost everything using NAL in their office. This is indeed a cool solution. Thanks, Prakash!

I have a better way to distribute the Printers icon to locked down desktops rather than using batch files etc. as suggested by Craig Wilson.

Here is how you can achieve the same result.

  1. Create an application object. You can name it Printer_icon_distribute.
  2. Use normal application create. You do not need to specify any location for the executable name. Just finish.
  3. Once the application object is created, use NWADMN32 to open the newly created application object.
  4. Create CPL_Printer.AXT with following value: [Registry Key Create]

    Flag=Write Always

    Key=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Desktop\NameSpace\{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}

    [Registry Value Create]

    Type=Default

    Flag=Write Always

    Key=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Desktop\NameSpace\{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}

    Name=

    Value=Printers

  5. Go to the registry tab of the application object and use file import to import the registry string from the axt file you have just created.
  6. You can use two-phase distribution by choosing Never Reboot so that when this application object is set to force run it will not ask users to reboot their PCs.
  7. Next time when the users shutdown their PCs as they logout at the end of the day, they will have the Printers Folder Icon on their locked down Windows NT desktop.

Note: The value in the AXT I picked up from a TID in the Knowledgebase. I have distributed the Printers Icon to 600 desktops in our office without any problem.
