To eliminate duplicate names on our network, I created an app object to change the computer name. I did this by snAppShotting the 95 machine with one name. Then I changed the workstation name again and finished the snAppShot process.

I then created my app object with the aot that was created.

I then went to the details of the app object and changed the registry settings to the following for computer name.

HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\ control\computername\ computername=%P_STATION%

HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\ services\vxd\vnetsup=%P_STATION%

The %P_STATION% attribute pulls the last half of the mac address. We tried %LOGIN_NAME% but some users log into multiple workstations and were still running into duplicate names. Hence the use of mac addresses: no two mac addresses should be the same.
