Jimmy Benson, one of our favorite school admins and author of several Cool Solutions, custom crafted these programs in response to a recent Open Call. We were looking for ways to block students and staff from using school computers to download copyrighted music from Napster, Gnutella, and other Peer-to-Peer music services. If you ever run into Jimmy, buy him a pint. These are outstanding additions to your arsenal.

Jimmy has modified his program to address concerns about Http tunneling. The programs attached will now look for all the MP3 file sharing programs, but in addition they will also look for the new troublesome software: HTTP-Tunnel, ICQProxy, and VCM software. If it finds this software running, it shuts it down without a prompt as well. This occurs every 45 seconds. With this program running in the background, they won't be running for long. By the time they get the software up and running, just about the time they are ready to start downloading MP3's, this program will close the program completely and they will need to start all over again.

For other solutions, see this article.

NT/2000 Solution

Updated February 28, 2001

This program runs in the background, and is invisible to users. The program will check your workstations every 45 seconds to see if Napster, BearShare, Newtella, Furi, Audiogalaxy, GNutella, LimeWire, GNucleus, HTTP-Tunnel, ICQProxy, or VCM is running, and shut it down if it is! The entire process takes less than one second!!

Simply place the KILL.exe file in your C:\WINNT\System32 folder, and run the DSAPPEAR.EXE file. That's all there is to it!

If you have ZENworks, I would recommend running this file in a user policy as an action, or you could force this applcation to users using a ZENworks application object.

Win 9.x Solution

This Win 9x solution will do exactly as the Windows NT/2000 solution.

Simply place the PV.exe, and MSVBVM50.DLL files in your C:\Windows\System folder, and then run the DSAPPEAR.EXE file. That's all there is to it!

If you have ZENworks, I would recommend running this file in a user policy as an action, or you could force this applcation to users using a ZENworks application object.

Download DSAPPEAR9X.ZIP
