Users in our company have "shortcuts" to corporate documents (MSOffice) and websites (URLs) delivered on their desktops via ZEN application objects. It was working fine when there were only Office '97 and Netscape used as a standard. Now we have many newer PCs with Office XP and IExplorer. Old application objects would not work on such new PCs due to the lack of the necessary older programs.

Many users were complaining about it.

SOLUTION: I produced secondary set of ZEN applications which utilize Office XP and IExplorer respectively. I have enabled fault tolerance in each old application and configured it to point to the appropriate secondary application. Now all the users have access to the resources as before, they do not even see any change.

EXAMPLE: Primary-old application configuration

Identification=>Path to Executable File: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe
Environment=>Command Line Parameters: http://www.novell.com
Fault Tolerance=>Enable Fault Tolerance: v
Fault Tolerance=>Enable Fault Tolerance=>Add (here I have specified secondary-new application)

Secondary-new application configuration

Identification=>Path to Executable File: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
Environment=>Command Line Parameters: http://www.novell.com

Other parameters are configured identically in both applications. The clue is it is not typical fault tolerance (no server crashes). We simply use various programs to access the same resource. It is easy to chain such application objects for more than two different programs.
