I had a problem downloading files from the NetWare server using Sun Download Manager 1.1. Here's how I solved it.

  1. Download the SUN Download Manager from:

I downloaded the Generic Platform version. The downloaded file is and it contains the file sdm.jar.

  2. Copy the sdm.jar file to sys:\java\lib. (You can copy it to another location too - but the Example ncf file supplied below uses this location.)

  3. Create a new directory call Downloads on the SYS volume (or wherever you want).

  4. Create a new ncf file in the sys:\system directory - for example - SDM.ncf containing the following:

    java -classpath sys:/java/lib/sdm.jar -Dhomedir=SYS:/Downloads -Dpropdir=SYS:/Downloads com.sun.sdm.SunDownloadManager %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9

-Dpropdir and -Dhomedir parameters determine which directories the SUM Download Manager will use for its properties and for the downloaded files.

  5. You can start the download manager from the system console with the following command: sdm

  6. If you want, you can add the URL for the download as a command line parameter. For example:

  7. After you execute sdm, the SUN Download Manager GUI is started on the NetWare console GUI and you can add files for download.

I tested this with NetWare 6.5 beta and it works OK.

You can start the SUN Download Manager directly from the server GUI using the Run option or even add it as an icon to the server GUI taskbar using the Menu Editor.

The new functionality of NetWare 6.5 which allows access to the server GUI console from the NetWare Remote Manager even makes it possible to use the SUN Download Manager from the server GUI remotely from any web browser supported by NetWare 6.5.

EXAMPLE: SDM.ncf file:

java -classpath sys:/java/lib/sdm.jar -Dhomedir=SYS:/Downloads -Dpropdir=SYS:/Downloads com.sun.sdm.SunDownloadManager %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
