Update: Bryan received a few requests for the VPN-less remote control, so he prepared a document (pdf).
Question: We want to be able to remotely control PCs at different sites over the internet, but I can't see an option to do this without a VPN and ConsoleOne. Ideally we would like to have a thin client program that we point at the ip of the server across the internet, and have it list the workstations with an option to take control remotely. Is that possible?
Answer: VPN-less remote control never worked that well in ZfD4.x
ZfD6.5 works to overcome this, but it requires the remote computer to initiate the request.
I had an alternative answer to offer: the solution we use is free, and excellent. Using UltraVNC, and utilitizing the VNC Repeater, we can open up one inbound port to a machine running the VNC_REPEATER, and can access any local computers...including File Transfer and chat! For additional security, you can set this up using SSH. For more information about our solution, feel free to contact me @ bkeadle@TAKETHISOUTkeadle.net
