Adding a Windows 2000 Server to Your Tree

The Problem

I will be installing a Win2K server with eDirectory 8.704 into an existing production tree that is running NDS 8.82 on NetWare 5.1 and NetWare 4.1.

I have spent half the day cleaning up and repairing the NDS tree eliminating obits and corrupt replicas. Do I need to perform an upgrade of the Master or CA NetWare 5.1 server to eDirectory in the production tree before I bring in this Win2K server?

Upgrading to NetWare 6 is not an option at this time. My choices are limited to upgrade the NetWare 5.1 Master to eDirectory and then bringing in the Win2K server, or to simply bring in the Win2K server.

We have a version of DSREPAIR on all servers now that actually supersedes the version in PREEDIRF. The Production tree version and patch levels include the following: OS: NetWare 5.x SP5, NetWare 4.x SP9DS: NDS 8.82, NDS 6.21

The Solution

There are four things to check here:

  • Certificate Server version. This should be at 2.0. They probably already have one on a 5.1 box and if it is at Support Pack 5 or greater it is probably already there - just need to check.

  • DS versions -- 6.21 is good -- I would patch to 8.83c or higher on the DS 8 servers. I'll be releasing DS885a.exe today or tm.

  • Current health - sounds like they are doing this fine.

  • Extending schema for 8.7.0 -- The best way to go about this is to first upgrade the master of root to, force a schema synch from that server then bring in the Win2k server. This can be done in other ways such as a remote tree import of schema or manually running the schema files but an in place on a rw or master of root has the least headaches. Also they should grab a dib (dsrepair -rc) and get a good trustee backup prior to the upgrade.
