Understanding Scheduling of Policies and Policy Packages

During creation, all policy packages are given a default run schedule (which is to run at user login). This means that all applicable policies (those that can be scheduled to run) in this package will run at the default time.

You can change the entire policy package schedule or can set a policy within the package to run at a different time from the rest of the package.

Adding and Scheduling an Action

Adding a scheduled action to a policy package is like adding a custom policy. This leverages the existing policy packages so that you can schedule a new action to occur on a group of objects you have already associated.

For example, you might want to routinely run a certain program to scan for viruses each morning. Assume you have a User Policy Package associated with the container where the User objects that you manage reside. You can schedule an action and add one item to the action (such as an .EXE) for the virus scanning program. By adding the action to an existing policy package, you simplify setting up this program. You don't need to specify which users will run this particular program, because you have already done that by associating the User Policy Package to the Container object where the User objects reside.

Scheduled actions are only effective when using the Workstation Management's Scheduler. To use Workstation Management features, install the Novell® ClientTM for Windows NT* or the Novell Client for Windows* 95/98 that ships with ZENworksTM.
