This section describes the PHP programming language and how Novell® has implemented it on NetWare®.
PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a server-side HTML-embedded scripting language that allows one to create dynamic Web pages. Like any other CGI language PHP can also be used to collect form data, create dynamic pages or send and receive cookie information. Its syntax draws upon C, Java, and Perl, and is easy to learn.
Though PHP supports a wide range of Web servers and databases, it is typically used with the Apache Web Server and MySQL* database. PHP can also be used for talking to other services using protocols like IMAP, SNMP, NNTP or HTTP.
While providing the hottest new scripting language onto the NetWare platform, PHP is yet another scripting option for Web developers. With Apache Web Server and MySQL available on NetWare, the ideal combination which many Web developer seek is now provided on NetWare.
The Zend engine provides the basic interpreter functionality for PHP. The PHP extensions and functions enhances the efficiency of PHP, by providing additional features.See, Functions and Extensions, for a list of supported extensions and unsupported functions.
