Novell DirXML Driver for NIS June 27, 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Table of Contents 1.0 Overview 2.0 Installation Requirements 3.0 Installation 4.0 Known Issues 5.0 Legal Information 5.1 Disclaimer, Patents, and Copyright 5.2 Novell Trademarks 5.3 Third-Party Trademarks ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1.0 Overview In mixed networks, Novell eDirectory communicates with a variety of data store spread across complex and heterogeneous computer systems in order to maintain network-wide information. On UNIX systems, such information is maintained in three different types of data stores: Files, NIS and NIS+ (NISplus). The DirXML driver synchronizes the information between the data stores and eDirectory. It uses DirXML 1.1 to communicate with eDirectory. For more information, refer the TID NOVL80620. 2.0 Installation Requirements Before you install and configure the DirXML Driver for NIS, keep in mind the following constraints: - The DirXML Driver for NIS can be run only on the application platform, that is, the machine where the Files, NIS, or NIS+ databases exist. If eDirectory is not installed on the application platform, you must use the Remote Loader to run the driver. - NIS or NIS+ should be configured before running drivers on either of them. - If the application platform hosts either NIS or NIS+, you must run the driver on the Master server. - Any two similar drivers (Files/NIS/NIS+) cannot be run on the same application machine. Prerequisites for installation: - NovellŪ DirXML 1.1 - Solaris Sparc 2.6 or 2.7 or 2.8, Solaris Intel, or Linux Redhat 7.0 or higher - IBM AIX 4.3, 5.1 - eDirectory Administration Utilities (for extending the schema) 3.0 Installation To install the DirXML Driver for NIS, complete the following steps: - Execute the ./nis-drv-install file from the setup directory. - Press Enter to read the License agreement. - Select the number of the language you desire to read the licence. - Enter y to accept the License agreement. The eDirectory schema extension can be done by executing the nis-drv-config script in the following manner - nis-drv-config [LDAP Specific Parameters] where LDAP Specific Parameters are the Command and Authentication parameters like hostname, bind DN, and password. If you are using clear-text passwords, ensure that the LDAP server is configured to accept clear-text passwords. 4.0 Known Issues - Password sync is not supported in case of groups. The group password will be reset if a group is modified in the eDirectory. - On Solaris, if the Remove Directory option is selected, the users will not be deleted if their home directory is not removable. - You cannot specify a single character asterix(*) in the gecos field. If specified, it will remove the already existing value. - Rename Operation is not supported for AIX. 5.0 Legal Information 5.1 Disclaimer, Patents, and Copyright Novell, Inc. makes no representations or warranties with respect to the contents or use of this documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose.
