2.4 Decide Which Database to Utilize

IMPORTANT:Database deployment recommendations are detailed in Section 2.7, Database Deployment Recommendations.

You can utilize either a PostgreSQL database or a Microsoft SQL Server database. Here are some considerations for choosing one over the other:

  • You might prefer to utilize Microsoft SQL Server if you have a Microsoft Licensing Agreement that entitles you to Microsoft SQL Server.

  • You might prefer to utilize the PostgreSQL database if you are proficient with Linux and have any of the following already deployed:

    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3

    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP4

    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12

    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP1

    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2

    • Open Enterprise Server 11 SP2

    • Open Enterprise Server 2015

    • Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1

    • CentOS7

    • Red Hat Linux Enterprise Sever 7

  • You might want to utilize a Microsoft SQL Server database if you prefer to manage Windows servers rather than Linux servers.

  • You might want to utilize a Microsoft SQL Server database if you have expertise with Microsoft products.

NOTE:In previous versions of File Reporter, we specified that you could host the PostgreSQL database on a Windows server. Since that time, we have conducted numerous performance tests and have concluded that running the PostgreSQL database on a Windows server will not meet acceptable performance standards for most organizations. We therefore recommend that any File Reporter 3.0 deployment that utilizes a PostgreSQL database, does so hosted on a supported Linux host.
