Chapter 5: Send a Message from GroupWise to OfficeVision/VM Users

Addressing is the syntax entered by users on the To: line of the GroupWise* Message view. The GroupWise user can type the recipient’s address or select the recipient from the Address Book.

How you choose to configure GroupWise determines the type of addressing syntax. Configure your system to make addressing convenient for users. While no additional addressing is required to send messages through the gateway, the resulting syntax, called nonconfigured addressing, is cumbersome. To simplify the addressing syntax used by users, select one of the options listed under configured addressing.

Nonconfigured Addressing

If you do not configure GroupWise with a foreign domain, the addressing syntax is:

gateway:“node ID.user”

An example of nonconfigured addressing would be:

ovvm:"vm1.maria"

This option lets GroupWise users communicate with OfficeVision/VM users without altering your GroupWise configuration. You must give users the gateway name (in this example, OVVM), and users must place quotation marks around the node ID.user portion of the address.

Users may find this addressing syntax too cumbersome. The next sections explain how to simplify addressing syntax.

Configured Addressing

GroupWise uses a foreign domain to communicate with users in non-GroupWise systems. If users on your system regularly exchange messages with a large number of users of OfficeVision/VM** , you should use one of the addressing configurations below.

Long Addressing (domain.po.user) - Create and Link a Foreign Domain
A foreign domain lets GroupWise users address OfficeVision/VM users without the gateway name and the quotation marks required in nonconfigured addressing.

For a GroupWise user to send a message to an OfficeVision/VM user, the syntax is:

foreign domain:node ID.user

For example, if Bob sends a message to Maria, an OfficeVision/VM user, the syntax is:

officevision:vm1.maria

To create a foreign domain,

  1. From NetWare* Administrator, click Tools {short description of image} GroupWise View.

  2. Right-click the name of your GroupWise System where you want to add the external domain {short description of image} click Create {short description of image} double-click External Domain.

  3. Fill in the fields:

External Domain Name: Type the name of the domain at the remote site. Make sure this name is identical to that of the domain at the remote site. If they are not identical, users cannot exchange messages.

    Domain Type: Select External Foreign.

    Version: Leave this as 4.x.

Time Zone: Select the time zone where the external domain is physically located.

Link To Domain: If you want to change the domain that your external domain is linked to, select the domain from the drop-down list box.

The remaining fields do not apply to external domains.

  4. Select Define Additional Properties {short description of image} click Create {short description of image} fill in the Description field. {short description of image} click OK.

You must link the foreign domain to the primary domain as explained in Create a Gateway Link to the Foreign Domain below.

Create a Gateway Link to the Foreign Domain
After you have created the external domain, you must link it to the domain where the gateway resides. This link establishes the connection between the gateway and the mainframe.

To link an external domain to the primary domain,

  1. From the GroupWise View in NetWare Administrator, click the domain where the gateway is located. This is the domain whose links you will edit.

  2. Click Tools {short description of image} GroupWise Utilities {short description of image} Link Configuration.

  3. Click View {short description of image} Gateway to display the Direct, Indirect, and Gateway links between the gateway's domain and the foreign domain. The link status graphics next to the link records indicate their status.

    Icon Description
     Unmodified
Modified - needs to be saved
Unsafe - change currently being replicated
Change made to link from another view
     No rights to change link

  4. Click the name of the foreign domain you want to link to.

  5. To change the link type to or from the foreign domain, click and drag the linked domain to the gateway window. The Edit Domain Link dialog displays the link properties.

  6. Fill in the fields:

    Link Type: Select Gateway.

Gateway Link: If you have created only one gateway object, the name of the gateway is displayed in this field. If you have created more than one gateway object, select the correct gateway from the list.

Gateway Access String: This field does not apply to the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

Return Link: This field does not apply to the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM. However, the name of the primary domain is included by default.

  7. Click OK to save the gateway link. If you are connecting to a GroupWise system with multiple domains, you must create indirect links to the external domains. See Create an Indirect Link to an External Domain in Chapter 7: Send a Message to Another GroupWise Domain Across the Mainframe for more information.

Short Addressing (po.user) - Create a Post Office
Adding a post office to a foreign domain shortens the addressing syntax to nodeID.user. The name of each post office must duplicate the name of the recipient’s VM node.

For a GroupWise user to send a message to an OfficeVision/VM user, the syntax is:

node ID.user

For example, if Bob sends a message to Maria, an OfficeVision/VM user, the syntax is:

vm1.maria

GroupWise syntax is not restricted to short addressing. Long addressing can also be used to send messages to OfficeVision/VM users.

Before you add a post office to a foreign domain, do the following:

If you have not completed both of these tasks, refer to the appropriate sections before you proceed.

To create a post office,

  1. From NetWare Administrator, click Tools {short description of image} GroupWise View.

  2. Right-click the name of your GroupWise System where you want to add the external domain {short description of image} click Create {short description of image} double-click External Post Office.

  3. Fill in the fields:

External Post Office Name: Type the name of the post office. This name must be identical to the name of the post office at the remote site. If the names are not identical, messages cannot be transferred.

External Domain: This name must be identical to the name of the domain at the remote site under which the remote post office is located. Click the browse box to change this if necessary.

Time Zone: Verify the time zone for the physical location of the external post office is correct. The post office assumes the time zone of the domain where it resides.

  4. Select Define Additional Properties {short description of image} Click Create.

  5. Fill in the Description field (Optional). For example, you could include the date, or any other information {short description of image} Click OK.

Simple Addressing (user)
There are two ways to configure simple addressing.

Add Users to the Foreign Post Office
Adding OfficeVision/VM user IDs to your GroupWise address list shortens the addressing syntax to the user ID. By adding OfficeVision/VM users to your address book, GroupWise users can easily select them. You can add users automatically or manually.

To send a message to a user at a remote site across the mainframe, a GroupWise user can use the address list or the following syntax:

user

For example, Bob sends a message to Maria, a GroupWise user at a remote site. The syntax is:

maria

Simple addressing does not restrict users from sending messages to GroupWise users of the remote site who are not included on the address list. Users can still use long and standard addressing to communicate with users who have not been added to the GroupWise address list.

For information about adding multiple users from the remote site to your GroupWise system, see Import Users into GroupWise in Chapter 1: Add Users to GroupWise in Book 2: Maintain GroupWise Users of the Maintenance Guide.

Before you add OfficeVision/VM user IDs to the post office of your foreign domain, do the following:

To add user IDs manually,

  1. From NetWare Administrator, click Tools {short description of image} GroupWise View.

  2. Right-click the name of your GroupWise System where you want to add the external domain {short description of image} click Create {short description of image} double-click External User.

  3. Fill in the fields:

User Name: Enter the exact ID of the user at the remote site. If the two user IDs are not identical, messages cannot be sent.

External Post Office: Ensure that the correct External GroupWise Post Office is shown.

  4. Select Define Additional Properties to define additional information for the external user {short description of image} Click Create to create the external user.

  5. Fill in the fields:

First Name: Enter the first name of the user at the remote site. This name does not need to be identical to the name used at the remote site. The name you enter here appears in the Address Book.

Last Name: Enter the last name of the user at the remote site. This name does not need to be identical to the name used at the remote site. The name you enter here appears in the Address Book.

    All other fields are optional.

  6. Click OK to save the information.

Add Users to the Gateway
Adding users to the gateway is recommended only when your GroupWise system sends a limited number of messages to a particular site. The foreign domain structure is preferred because of its addressing flexibility.

A gateway is the same level as a post office.

Assign OfficeVision/VM users to a gateway the same way you assign them to a post office. Adding a user to the gateway shortens the addressing syntax and adds the user to your GroupWise address book. Users added to the gateway must be assigned both an individual user ID and a user alias. The alias must match the user’s VM node and the user ID.

To send a message to a user at a remote site across the mainframe, a GroupWise user can use the address list or the following syntax:

user

In the sample system, Bob sends a message to Maria, a GroupWise user at a remote site. The syntax is:

maria

To add users to the gateway,

  1. From NetWare Administrator, click tools {short description of image} GroupWise View {short description of image} right-click the OV/VM Gateway {short description of image} click Create {short description of image} click External User {short description of image} click OK.

  2. Fill in the fields:

User Name: Enter the OfficeVision/VM user's user ID.

External Post Office: Ensure that the correct External GroupWise Post Office is shown.

  3. Select Define Additional Properties to define additional information for the external user {short description of image} Click Create to create the external user.

  4. Fill in the fields:

First Name: Enter the OfficeVision/VM user's first name. This name does not need to be identical to the name used at the remote site. The name you enter here appears in the Address Book.

Last Name: Enter the OfficeVision/VM user's last name. This name does not need to be identical to the name used at the remote site. The name you enter here appears in the Address Book.

    All other fields are optional.

  5. Click the Aliases page.

  6. Fill in the fields:

Domain.PO: This field displays the domain and post office (the gateway name) where the alias will be created.

Object ID: This field displays the gateway user's ID.

Gateway Alias Type: Click the browse button to list the Gateway Alias Types that have been defined for this GroupWise domain. Select the gateway alias type for Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

Gateway Alias: Enter the user's VM node ID and user ID. For example, vm1.karl.
