Chapter 7: Send a Message to Another GroupWise Domain Across the Mainframe
Addressing is the syntax GroupWise users enter on the To: line of the GroupWise* Message View, as shown below, to send messages. The GroupWise user can type the recipients address or select the recipient from the Address Book.
Your GroupWise systems configuration determines the complexity of the addressing syntax for the user. You will want to configure your system to make addressing as convenient as possible for users.
This chapter describes the steps you must follow to configure your GroupWise system so users can exchange messages with users of other GroupWise systems using the mainframe as the transport vehicle. Before you installed the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM**, the mainframe system programmer included the gateway in RSCS as an NJE node. The mainframe can be used to facilitate passthrough addressing without using OfficeVision/VM.
GroupWise-to-GroupWise
Addressing Basics
Users of separately administered GroupWise systems can exchange
messages across the mainframe using GroupWise addressing syntax. This
process, called passthrough addressing, differs from sending a message to
an OfficeVision/VM user because messages do not need to be converted to
another file format, and full GroupWise functionality is maintained.
Passthrough addressing requires one GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM
to be installed in at least one domain of each GroupWise system.
A passthrough message is encapsulated, or placed in an envelope by the gateway. The gateway stamps the envelope with the necessary header file, then routes it across the mainframe. When the message arrives at the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM of the other GroupWise system, that gateway removes the envelope and passes the message to the Message Transfer Agent, which distributes it to the intended recipient. Throughout this process, the message retains its native GroupWise format.
The example used in this chapter demonstrates how to configure passthrough addressing between two single-domain systems. You can also use passthrough addressing to connect multiple-domain systems via an indirect link. For more information about how to do this, see Create an Indirect Link to an External Domain later in this chapter.
Addressing Without Configuring Your GroupWise System
Once the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM is installed at each site, users of each GroupWise system can send messages to each other across the mainframe. However, if you choose not to further configure your GroupWise system, users may find addressing cumbersome. Without any further configuration, the addressing syntax for passthrough addressing is:
gateway:linkID of remote site.passthru:domain.po.user
For example, if Bob sends a message to Karl, a user of another GroupWise system, the syntax is:
ovvm:"ovvmnje2.passthru":main.marketing.karl
For information about how to simplify the address string, proceed to the next section.
Configuring Addressing When Connecting through an External Domain
A passthrough link connects the gateway of one GroupWise system with the gateway of another GroupWise system via the mainframe. The GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM uses an external domain structure to establish the passthrough link. Because both systems use GroupWise, there are a variety of addressing options, depending on how you configure your system. The following sections step you through the process of setting up an external domain. See Chapter 1: Connect Systems by Using External Domains in Book 1: Connect GroupWise 5.2 Systems of the Connectivity Guide
To enable passthrough addressing at both sites, each system administrator must create an external domain structure that duplicates the domain structure of the site to which he or she is connecting. In this example, the GroupWise administrator for the Headquarters domain creates an external domain called Main. At the same time, the GroupWise administrator for the Main domain creates an external domain called Headquarters. By duplicating the post office and users of the remote domain, each GroupWise administrator can reduce the required addressing syntax for users.
Users of both GroupWise systems can exchange messages using standard GroupWise addressing once each GroupWise system administrator has configured his or her external domain. The mainframe serves as the transport vehicle between the two systems.
The terms remote site and local site are essential to an understanding of passthrough addressing. In the examples used below, the Headquarters domain is the local site, and the Main domain is the remote site. All configuration options apply to both sites.
Standard
Addressing (domain.po.user) - Create and Link an External Domain
If you create and link an external domain to your GroupWise system,
users can send messages to any user of the domain at the remote site using
standard addressing.
For a user to send a message to a user of another GroupWise system via the mainframe, the syntax is:
domain.post office.user
In the sample system, Bob sends a message to Karl, a user of another GroupWise system, use the following syntax:
main.marketing.karl
The name of the external domain you create must be identical to that of the domain at the remote site.
To create an external domain,
After you have created the external domain, you must link it to the domain where the gateway resides.
If you are connecting to a GroupWise system with multiple domains, you must create an external domain for each domain at the remote site.
Link
the Domains
External domains must be linked to the domain where the gateway
resides. You must create an indirect link for each domain in your
GroupWise system that does not include the GroupWise Gateway for
OfficeVision/VM.
Create a Direct Link to an External Domain
After you have created the external domain, you must link it to the domain where the gateway resides. This link establishes the connection between the gateway and the mainframe. To create a direct link,
- From the NetWare Administrator browser window, click the domain where the gateway is located. This is the domain whose links you will edit.
- Click Tools
GroupWise Utilities
Link Configuration.
- Click View
Gateway to display the Direct, Indirect and Gateway links between the gateway's domain and the foreign domain. The link status graphics next to the link records indicate their status.
Icon Description Unmodified Modified - needs to be saved Unsafe - change currently being replicated Change made to link from another view No rights to change link
- Double-click the name of the external domain you want to link to. The Edit Domain Link dialog is displayed
- Select Direct from the Link Type drop-down box.
- Click OK to save the gateway link. If you are connecting to a GroupWise system with multiple domains, you must create indirect links to the external domains.
Create an Indirect Link to an External Domain
You must create an indirect link for each domain in your GroupWise system that does not include the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM. If you want to further simplify the addressing syntax, you must add a post office to your external domain. For more information about how to create a post office to an external domain, see Short Addressing (po.user) - Create a Post Office later in this chapter. If your GroupWise system or the GroupWise system you are configuring for passthrough addressing has multiple domains, you must create a link for each domain that does not include the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.
In this example, an indirect link will be created for an external domain. Follow the same steps to create an indirect link for secondary domains that do not include the gateway.
To create an indirect link,
- From the GroupWise View in NetWare Administrator, click the domain where the gateway is located. This is the domain whose links you will edit.
- Click Tools
GroupWise Utilities
Link Configuration.
- Click View
Gateway to display the Direct, Indirect, and Gateway links between the gateway's domain and the external domain. The link status graphics next to the link records indicate their status.
Icon Description Unmodified Modified - needs to be saved Unsafe - change currently being replicated Change made to link from another view No rights to change link
- Double-click the name of the external domain you want to link to. The Edit Domain Link dialog is displayed.
- Select Indirect from the Link Type drop-down box.
- From the Indirect Link Domain field, select the name of the remote site's domain that includes the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.
- Click OK to save the gateway link.
Short
Addressing (po.user) - Create a Post Office
If you add a post office to an external domain, users do not have to
use an external domain name in the addressing syntax. The name of the post
office at the local site must be identical to the name of the post office
of the domain at the remote site.
For a GroupWise user to send a message to a user of another GroupWise system across the mainframe, the syntax is:
post office.user
In the sample system, if Bob wants to send a message to Karl, a user of another GroupWise system, the syntax is:
marketing.karl
Short addressing does not restrict users from using standard or nonconfigured addressing to send messages to GroupWise users at the remote site.
Before you can add a post office to an external domain, do the following:
If you have not completed each of these tasks, refer to the appropriate sections before you proceed.
To create a post office,
The post office is displayed in the System window under the external domain. You can create as many post offices as you need to duplicate the remote sites structure.
If you want to further reduce the addressing syntax, you can add user IDs from the remote site to the post office you just created. See Simple Addressing below.
Simple
Addressing (user) - Add Users to the External Post Office
Adding user IDs from the remote site to your GroupWise address list
makes addressing convenient. Users can then simply type the remote site
users ID on the To: line of the GroupWise Message View, or they can
select remote site users from the GroupWise address list.
There are two ways to add user IDs from the remote site to your GroupWise system: (1) add each user ID manually, or (2) use the Export/Import feature. Using the Export/Import option is recommended if you want to add a large number of user IDs. For more information on Import/Export, see Import Users into GroupWise in Chapter 1: Add Users to GroupWise in Book 2: Maintain GroupWise Users of the Maintenance Guide.
To send a message to a user at a remote site across the mainframe, a GroupWise user can use the address list or the following syntax:
user
In the sample system, Bob sends a message to Karl, a GroupWise user at a remote site, the syntax is:
karl
Simple addressing does not restrict users from sending messages to GroupWise users of the remote site who are not included on the address list. Users can still use long and standard addressing to communicate with users at the remote site who have not been added to the GroupWise address list.
For information about adding multiple users from the remote site to your GroupWise system, see Import Users into GroupWise in Chapter 1: Add Users to GroupWise in Book 2: Maintain GroupWise Users of the Maintenance Guide.
Before you can add user IDs from the remote site to the post office of the external domain, do the following.
If you have not completed these tasks, refer to the appropriate sections before you proceed.
