Novell GroupWise 5.2 Gateway for OfficeVision/VM Guide

Chapter 10: Enhance Gateway Functionality

Define Gateway Time Settings

The properties on the Gateway Time Settings page let you adjust how frequently the gateway polls its message queuing directories. Incoming and outgoing messages are stored in priority queues. The gateway polls these queues and then forwards the messages for distribution. Make sure you balance the gateway's polling time requirements with the other applications running on the gateway server.

To define the gateway time settings,

  1. From the NetWare* Administrator browser window, double-click the domain where you created the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM**.

  2. Right-click the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM {short description of image} click Details {short description of image} Gateway Time Settings.

  3. If necessary, change the data in the Time Settings fields.

Send/Receive Cycle: Use this option to set the gateway's send and receive processing time interval in minutes. If you leave it at the default (2 minutes), the gateway performs its send cycle for 1 minute and its receive cycle for 1 minute. When the time expires, the gateway remains idle for the amount of time set in the Idle Sleep Duration option.

Minimum Run: This option does not apply to the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

Idle Sleep Duration: Enter a duration (in seconds) that you want the gateway to "sleep" when it has no files to send, receive, or convert. When this duration expires, the gateway "wakes up" briefly to check for messages. If there are no messages, it "sleeps" again to save CPU cycles and to free up the machine for multitasking. A low setting, such as 5 seconds, speeds up the gateway's processing, but it also requires more computer resources.

Snap Shot Interval: Enter the interval for which you want the gateway to compile its performance statistics. This field is a "sliding" interval that is used in the gateway operation screen. The display changes every 60 seconds to show only the previous <x> seconds of activity.

Define Gateway Log Settings

The properties on the Log Settings page set the gateway's log file configuration defaults according to your needs. The Gateway for OfficeVision/VM can create a log file (that is, a processing record for incoming and outgoing messages) as it runs. The gateway log file is stored in the gateway's 000.PRC directory and can be viewed from the gateway operation screen. See Chapter 11: Monitor Gateway Operations for more information.

To define the gateway log settings,

  1. From the NetWare Administrator browser window, double-click the domain where you created the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

  2. Right-click the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM object {short description of image} click Details {short description of image} Log Settings.

  3. If necessary, change the data in the Log Settings fields.

Logging Level: Use this property to set the level of detail you want recorded in the log file. The log level can be set on the Log Settings page in NetWare Administrator, at the startup command line, in the startup file, or from the gateway operation screen.

Gateway logging levels are hierarchical. Diagnostic is the highest and Normal is the lowest. The Diagnostic level displays its own message types as well as the message types displayed by the Normal and Verbose levels.
    Logging Levels Description
Off This setting disables the logging mode. No messages will be displayed in the log window of the gateway operation screen.
Normal This is the default setting. It displays only basic message routing information, providing only a summary of gateway activity.
Verbose This setting displays extra message routing details and message processing information.
Diagnostic This level provides a detailed trace of gateway messages, errors, and operations and can be useful for troubleshooting.

Max Log Age: Select the number of days you want to retain the log file. The range is unlimited. Select zero (0) for the maximum.

Limit Disk Usage: Enter the amount of disk space (in kilobytes) you want the limit to be for log files. When the limit is reached, the gateway deletes the oldest file until the space occupied is under the maximum allowable limit.

If you set the limit to zero (0), there will be no disk space limit for log files.

Define Optional Gateway Settings

  1. From the NetWare Administrator browser window, double-click the domain where you created the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

  2. Right-click the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM object {short description of image} click Details {short description of image} Optional Gateway Settings.

  3. If necessary, change the data in the Optional Gateway Settings fields.

Directory Synchronization: Directory synchronization is the sharing of directory information (that is, the address lists) between GroupWise* and another messaging system connected to GroupWise through a gateway. Select Directory Synchronization to enable directory synchronization or select None to disable this feature. Directory Exchange does not apply to the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

Accounting: Click Yes if you want the gateway to keep accounting records for every message it sends or receives. The gateway records this information in an ASCII text file called ACCT, which is placed in the <000>.PRC subdirectory and updated daily at midnight or when the gateway is terminated. See Accounting Files later in this chapter for more information.

Accounting information for the previous day's activity is sent daily to the user designated as the accountant. If no user is so designated, the file is deleted.

Convert Status to Messages: This field does not apply to the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

Outbound Status Level: Select the status level desired.
    Outbound Status Levels Description
    None No status information delivered.
    Undelivered Undeliverable status information delivered.
    Delivered Message undeliverable
    Message delivered
    Open Message undeliverable
    Message delivered
    Message opened
    Full Message undeliverable
    Message delivered
    Message opened
    Message deleted
    Message emptied
    Non-receipt notification

GroupWise lets you track a message's status from the time the message is sent until the recipient deletes it. When a GroupWise user receives a message from a user of a foreign messaging system, GroupWise sends a status message to the sender.

Using this option, you can adjust the amount of detail in the status messages sent to the foreign system. You may not always want to have the outbound status level enabled. For instance, if you work with a radio carrier or some other form of message transport for which it is expensive to send messages, disable this option.

Enable Recovery: When this field is set to Yes, the gateway attempts to recover the NJE link for the OS/2** version of the gateway. For the NLM* version of the gateway, set this field to No.

Retry Count: This field sets the number of times the OS/2 version of the gateway attempts to recover the NJE link. Select a number from 1-99. This field does not apply to the NLM version of the gateway.

Retry Interval: This field sets the number of seconds the OS/2 version of the gateway waits between recovery attempts. This field does not apply to the NLM version of the gateway.

Failed Recovery Wait: This field does not apply to the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

Network Reattach: This option creates a command that attempts to reattach the OS/2 version of the gateway to the network if the gateway's access is interrupted. You can also reference a REXX file or an OS/2 command (CMD) file that can attempt to reestablish the network connection.
    Example
    map j:=server1\sys:headq
If you use this option, you must store the executable files (OVVM.EXE and NJE.EXE) for the gateway, as well as the DLL files, on the hard drive of the gateway station. To run the gateway from the hard drive, use the /home command line switch explained. See Appendix B: Startup Switches for more information.

This field does not apply to the NLM version of the gateway.

Correlation Enabled: This option lets you choose whether or not to activate Message Correlation, which is used to keep track of incoming status messages from foreign systems. The message correlation is a record in the database that allows mainframe status message to be converted back into a status message format that can be read by GroupWise. Select Yes to activate Message Correlation.

To use cross-calendar checking (Busy Search) and the OfficeVision/VM .AK command, Message Correlation must be enabled.

Correlation Age: Enter the number of days you want the correlation record to remain in the GroupWise system database.

Define a Network Address

The network address property is an optional gateway configuration. The dialog lets you define the TCP/IP or IPX address for a gateway so that certain network monitoring or management programs can detect its presence and send SNMP messages to them.

To set up network addresses,

  1. From the NetWare Administrator browser window, double-click the domain where you created the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

  2. Right-click the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM object {short description of image} click Details {short description of image} Network Address.

  3. Click the radio button adjacent to the network protocol you wish to specify  click Add to open the Add Network Address window step separator fill in the network address properties.

    TCP/IP Address

TCP/IP Address: Provide the IP address, in dotted decimal format, of the server or workstation where the gateway will run.

DNS Host Name: Provide the DNS host name of the server or workstation where the gateway will run.

    IPX Address

Network: Specify the cable segment number in hexadecimal (digits 0-9, letters A-F) of the server or workstation where the agent or gateway will run. On a NetWare server, specify the internal IPX number.

Node: Specify the network board number in hexadecimal (digits 0-9, letters A-F) of the server or workstation where the agent or gateway will run.

On a NetWare server where you have specified the internal IPX number in the Network field, the node is typically 000000000001. For Ethernet** boards, the number is set at the factory.

For token ring and ARCnet** boards, the number is set using jumpers on the board.

  4. Fill in the SNMP community strings fields:

SNMP Community Strings: If you want the gateway to receive and respond to SNMP requests, you can provide community strings as part of its configuration in NetWare Administrator. The information provided is then stored in the domain database and can be discovered by network management and monitoring programs such as Novell's GroupWise Monitor.

Get: Provide the "get" community string for the server where the gateway will run. If access to gateway information is unrestricted, the "get" community string would typically be PUBLIC.

Set: Provide the "set" community string for the server where the gateway will run. If access to gateway information is unrestricted, the "set" community string would typically be PUBLIC.

Define Gateway Administrators

A gateway administrator is any GroupWise user assigned to receive error messages, notification of problem with incoming messages, accounting files, and diagnostic information from the gateway. An administrator does not have to be the system administrator or have any special network rights. The gateway for OfficeVision/VM supports Operator, Accountant, Postmaster, Foreign Operator administrator levels.

To define gateway administrators,

  1. From the NetWare Administrator browser, window double-click the domain where you created the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM.

  2. Right-click the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM object {short description of image} click Details {short description of image} Gateway Administrators.

  3. Click Add to display the Select Object dialog box step separator double-click the GroupWise User from the list (you may need to browse to find the right User).

  4. Click the box adjacent to each administrator type to assign a type to this user.

Operator: The gateway notifies the Operator when domains can no longer be accesssed.

Accountant: The gateway keeps accounting records for every message it sends if the Accounting feature is enabled. Daily at midnight and when the gateway is shut down, the accounting file is sent to each user assigned as the Accountant. See Accounting Files below for more information. You can assign more than one user as an Accountant. For information about enabling the accounting feature, see the Accounting field under Define Optional Gateway Settings earlier in this chapter.

Postmaster: The user assigned as Postmaster receives incoming messages that cannot be delivered to the intended recipient.

The gateway checks conditions in the following order before sending undeliverable messages to the Postmaster.

If all the conditions are met, the gateway adds the Postmaster as a recipient for the message and sends the complete message to the Postmaster. The gateway also sends the Postmaster a message for each undeliverable recipient indicating that the message was delivered to the Postmaster. The gateway sends a delivery report back to the sender indicating that the message was sent to the Postmaster.

If any of the conditions are not met, the gateway sends a non-delivery report back to the sender for each message that cannot be delivered to the recipient.

Foreign Operator: A Foreign Operator is an OfficeVision/VM user who has rights to send commands that monitor the Gateway for OfficeVision/VM. The following list of commands explains the Foreign Operator types at the CMS or OfficeVision/VM prompt of a VM terminal.
get status: This command displays the Status box of the gateway operation screen.
    Syntax
sm rscs machine ID cmd gateway link ID get status

    Example
sm rscs2 cmd ovvmnje1 get status
get statistics: This command displays the Message Statistics box of the gateway operation screen.
    Syntax
sm rscs machine ID cmd gateway link ID get statistics

    Example
sm rscsv2 cmd ovvmnje1 get statistics
reset statistics: This command, which is similar to the Zero Stats keystroke option on the gateway operation screen, sets all statistics to zero.
    Syntax
sm rscs machine ID cmd gateway link ID reset statistics

    Example
sm rscsv2 cmd ovvmnje1 reset statistics
restart: This command restarts the gateway.
    Syntax
sm rscs machine ID cmd gateway link ID restart

    Example
    sm rscsv2 cmd ovvmnje1 restart

Accounting Files
The accounting file is an ASCII-delimited text file that records the source, priority, message type, destination, and size of each item sent through the GroupWise Gateway for OfficeVision/VM. The file, which is updated every day at midnight, is called ACCT and is located in the /000.PRC directory. If no accountant is specified for the gateway, the file will be deleted and recreated each day. Each item sent through the gateway is recorded on a separate line with each field separated by a comma. The table below describes the fields in the order they are found in the accounting file.

Name Description
SenderUser The user name that sent the item
AccountID The Account ID specified in the User Information field
BillTo This field applies only to the GroupWise Fax/Print Gateway
MsgSubject The maximum length of the Subject field
MsgPriority The priority of the item sent (high, medium, or low)
Date The date of the item that was sent
Time The time the item was sent
GroupWiseMsgType The type of the item that was sent (Mail or Appointment)
FrgnMsgType The type of item sent from a foreign system
AttCount The number of attachments sent with the item
AcctUnits The byte size of the item sent through the gateway

GateDomain The destination domain name
GatePostOffice The destination post office name
DestUserCount The number of users the item was sent to
Destination The Internet address or recipient user name
Record A hard return to separate each item description

In an accounting file, two or more commas in a row indicate that a field has no data. In this case, the extra commas serve only as placeholders.

To make the accounting file easier to read, you can merge it with one of the two primary merge files (WP51ACCT.PF or WP60ACCT.PF) that are provided with the gateway, or you can create your own merge file.

Interpret the Accounting File
One line of an accounting file is shown below.

Jussi,,,memo,2,03/26/95,20:52:55,Mail,Mail,0,2593,Sales,Marketing,Headquarters,OVVM,1,VM1

Each item sent through the gateway is recorded on a separate line, with the fields separated by commas. Two or more commas in a row indicate that a field has no data. The following table describes the fields in the order in which they are found in the accounting file.

Convert Documents going to VM to WordPerfect 4.2 format: Check this field if you want attachments sent from GroupWise to OfficeVision/VM to be converted to WordPerfect** 4.2 for VM.

Nickname File Format Line: OfficeVision/VM users can use nickname files to reduce the addressing syntax for outgoing messages. If you enable Directory Synchronization, a complete copy of the GroupWise Address Book is sent to the mainframe as an OfficeVision/VM nickname file. This field is used to make sure the nickname file the gateway sends conforms to the file format OfficeVision/VM uses. For more information about Directory Synchronization, see Directory Synchronization under Define Optional Gateway Settings earlier in this chapter. Use this field to duplicate the format of the OfficeVision/VM nickname file.

The following table lists the field names that can be used to create a nickname file format.

    Field Value
    dp Department
    fn First Name
    ln Last Name
    ni Network ID
    ph Phone Number
    ti Title
    wd GroupWise Domain
    wh GroupWise Post Office
    wu GroupWise User ID
    vh VM Node ID
    vu VM User ID

You must use the following format specifiers to make sure the fields conform to the nickname file format.

    Specifier Usage
% Signals the beginning of a placeholder.
    justification [-] Left-justified.
    [ ]Right-justified.
width Minimum number of characters. When the parameter is left-justified, extra spaces are added to the end of the variable; when the parameter is right justified, extra spaces precede the variable.
precision Defines the maximum number of characters; if the variable exceeds this value, the text is truncated.

When you combine the variables with the format specifiers, the syntax is:

    %[justification][width].[precision] variable

The default syntax provided in the dialog box is translated as follows:

    %-8.8vu %-8.8yh %8.8vu *%fn %ln

Following this format, the nickmane file appears as shown below:

BOB ADVERT BOB *Bob Brown
CHRIS ADVERT CHRIS *Christopher Jones

Define Server List

Use this option to register NetWare file servers that contain GroupWise post offices belonging to the domain where the gateway resides.
