Chapter 11: Monitor Gateway Operations
The gateway operation screen shows the status of the gateway, message statistics, and logging information, and also lets you set various options.
The gateway operation screen is divided into the following sections:
Description/Header
The
top portion of the gateway operation screen provides the following
information.
Domain.Gateway: This field displays the domain and gateway name.
UpTime: This field displays the length of time the gateway has been running.
Description: This field displays the description you added when you configured the gateway using NetWare* Administrator.
Status
The Status portion of the gateway operation screen provides the following
information:
Processing: This field displays a spinning bar if the gateway is running. The gateway is not running if there is no bar or if the bar is stationary for an extended period.
GroupWise: This field displays whether the gateway's network connection to the GroupWise* domain is Open or Closed. It is normal for this field to display Closed for a minute or so while the gateway is initializing.
NJE Link: This field displays the status of the mainframe connection. Messages can be sent or received if the word Open is displayed. If the word Closed is displayed, the mainframe connection has been terminated.
Program: This field displays the gateway's processing cycle. Use the NetWare Administrator Time option to adjust the processing cycle. For more information, see Define Gateway Time Settings in Chapter 10: Enhance Gateway Functionality.
Log Level: This field displays the current logging level
For most uses, the Normal level provides a balance of information and detail. The logging options are listed in the table below.
| Log Level | Description |
| Off | Disables the logging function. |
| Normal | Displays warnings and error messages. This is the preferred logging level. |
| Verbose | Displays information about gateway traffic, including nondelivery reports, in addition to warnings and error messages. |
| Diagnostic | Displays functions calls the gateway makes. This is not usually helpful for standard troubleshooting. |
Press F10, then press F2 if you want to change the logging level for the current gateway session. You can also choose a default logging level when configuring the gateway.
The logging option lets you select and filter the level of informational and error messages you want the gateway to log. If you are running the gateway from a dedicated station, you can log messages to the gateway operation screen and to a log file, which is located in the 000.PRC directory.
Scr Saver: This field displays the time, in minutes, when the gateway screen saver activates if there is no keyboard activity. For more information, see F5-Screen Saver later in this chapter.
Process ID: This field displays the process ID number (000 to 999) that you specify when you start the gateway. The default is 000. You can start parallel gateway processes to enhance throughput and to have a redundant backup. For more information on this feature, see the /pid switch in Appendix B: Startup Switches.
Message
Statistics
This portion of the screen displays the amount
of incoming and outgoing gateway traffic. The two columns display the
cumulative totals and the snapshot totals.
You set the time interval of the snap shot column using NetWare Administrator. You can use the snap shot interval to get a more accurate picture of the amount of recent gateway traffic. For more information, see Define Gateway Time Settings in Chapter 10: Enhance Gateway Functionality.
Normal: This line displays the number of normal incoming and outgoing messages processed by the gateway.
Status: This line displays the number of status messages the gateway has sent and received. The amount of status message traffic depends in part on the outbound status level of the gateway. An outbound status level set to Full causes more status messages than an outbound status level set to Undelivered. For more information about setting outbound status level, see Define Gateway Time Settings in Chapter 10: Enhance Gateway Functionality.
Passthrough: This line displays the number of incoming and outgoing passthrough messages (messages transferred between two GroupWise systems via the gateway) the gateway has processed.
Conv Errors: This line displays the number of conversion errors for incoming and outgoing messages.
Comm Errors: This line displays the number of incoming and outgoing communication errors.
Total Bytes: This line displays the total number of bytes of incoming and outgoing messages the gateway has processed.
Logging
The Logging portion of the gateway operation screen displays the gateway's
activity. The amount of detail in this display depends on the logging
level you select. See Log Level earlier
in this chapter.
Menu
Functions
The menu functions on the gateway operation
screen provide you with the following options:

F8-Info: Choose this option to display the gateway's current configuration in the Message portion of the gateway operation screen and in the logfile.
F9-Browse LogFile: Press this key to browse the logfile. The following menu displays at the bottom of the screen when you are in browse mode.
F1-Cancel Browse: Press this key to exit browse mode and return to the gateway operation screen.
F2-Search: Press this key to search forward in the logfile for a text string. Press Shift, F2 to search backward for a text string. Enter the string when the search forward or search backward prompt appears.
Up-arrow, Down-arrow: Press the arrow keys to scroll up or down one line at a time.
PgUp, PgDn: Use these keys to scroll a screen at a time.

F1-Exit Options: Press this key to return to the gateway operation screen.
F2-Log Level: Press this key to select a log level option for the current gateway execution only. This keystroke overrides the default log level set in NetWare. See Log Level earlier in this chapter.
F5-Screen Saver: Press this key to scroll through the screen saver time intervals. Choose Off to disable the screen saver.
F6-Colors: Use this option to scroll through the several color options. This option is useful if the gateway station has a monochrome monitor because some colors are unreadable for monochrome monitors. You can also use this option to quickly identify a gateway where multiple gateways are running
F8-Zero Stats: Use this option to reset the values in the Statistics portion of the screen.
