Novell NetWare Server Consolidation Utility Readme August, 2002 1.0 Overview 2.0 Installation Issues 3.0 Known Issues 4.0 Legal Information ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 Overview ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Novell NetWare Server Consolidation Utility helps you consolidate data from several servers onto a single server, so you have fewer servers to manage. For information on installing and running the Server Consolidation Utility, go to http://www.novell.com/documentation/lg/servercon. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 Installation Issues ---------------------------------------------------------------- NetWare 6 Needs Newest TSA600.NLM File ---------------------------------------------------------------- Make sure you are running the newest version of the TSA600.NLM program on NetWare 6 servers. After installing the Server Consolidation Utility, compare the version of TSA600.NLM located in Program Files/Novell/NetWare Server Consolidation Utility/Products/NW60 with the version running on the destination NetWare 6 server. If the file running on the server is older, unload TSA600.NLM, and then reload the newer version of TSA600.NLM. Manually Unload and Reload TSA500.NLM ---------------------------------------------------------------- TSA500.NLM is updated when you consolidate NetWare 5.x. You must unload TSA500.NLM and reload it to ensure the correct file is being used. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 3.0 Known Issues ---------------------------------------------------------------- NetWare 4.2 to NetWare 4.2 Server Consolidations ---------------------------------------------------------------- If critical errors occur during the verification process, load CLIBAUX.NLM on the NetWare 4.2 destination server. Then retry the verification process. Consolidating to or from a NetWare 5.1 Cluster ---------------------------------------------------------------- When a volume is cluster-enabled, an object is created in eDirectory with the name of the cluster followed by an underscore followed by the volume name. For example, Cluster1_Vol1. For the Server Consolidation Utility to function properly with a NetWare 5.1 cluster enabled volume, the server name followed by an underscore followed by the volume name object must be used in the project window instead. For example, Server1_Vol1. This substitution can be accomplished by completing the following steps. 1. Start ConsoleOne, and browse to the context where the NCP Server object resides. 2. Right click on the right pane, select NEW/Volume, and enter the name of the new object in the first field. This should be the server name followed by an underscore followed by the volume name. 3. In the second field, browse and select the appropriate server. In the third field click the drop down menu and select the volume, then click OK. 4. In the Server Consolidation Utility project window refresh the container where the volume object is located to make the new object appear. 5. When dragging and dropping in the project window, use the newly created volume object. 6. After the consolidation is complete, delete the newly created volume object. If you use the Clustername_Volumename object instead of creating and using the new volume object described above, a critical SMDR error will occur and you won’t be able to complete the consolidation process. Restoring Trustees ------------------------------------------------------------------- Trustees might not be fully restored after the consolidation is finished because NSS volumes depend on the NDS Backlink process to create ID information on objects before trustees can be associated with those objects. This is a temporary condition that can be addressed by running the Backlink process for all user and group objects and rebooting the server after the Backlink process completes. To manually run the Backlink process, enter the following commands at the server console: set dstrace=on set dstrace=+blink set dstrace=*b If you switch to the Directory Services screen on the server, you will see the objects being processed. The above commands will need to be repeated until no more User or Group objects appear in the backlinked list on the Directory Services screen. After completing the backlink process run NSS /resetidcache or reboot the server. Performance on a NetWare 5 server -------------------------------------------------------------------- In order to achieve optimal performance with this utility on a NetWare 5 server, the correct version of SMDR.NLM must be loaded. To do this, at the server unload SMDR.NLM, then load the SMDR.NLM that comes with the Server Consolidation utility. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.0 Legal Information -------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer, Patents, Copyright, and Export Notice Novell, Inc. makes no representations or warranties with respect to the contents or use of this documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose.
