Installing Remote Management on NetWare and Windows Servers

  1. Review the Readme for any last-minute information concerning installation.

README.TXT is located at the root of the ZENworks for Servers Program CD or in the ZENWORKSFORSERVERS directory on the ZENworks 6 Server Management Program CD. READMEZFS302.HTML is located in the DOCUMENT directory on the Program CD, and the most up-to-date HTML version is located on the Novell Documentation Web site.

  2. Select a Windows NT/2000 workstation or server where you will run the ZfS 3.0.2 installation program.

The recommended version of Novell ClientTM must be installed on this workstation or server.

IMPORTANT:  Ensure that ConsoleOne is not running on this workstation or server during the ZfS 3.0.2 installation.

  3. Log into the eDirectory tree or trees where you are installing the Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins.

  4. At the workstation, insert the Program CD.

The startup screen is displayed. If the startup screen is not automatically displayed after inserting the CD, run WINSETUP.EXE, located at the root of the CD.

IMPORTANT:  If you copied the Program CD structure to the installation workstation's hard drive, the path between the root of the hard drive and the first CD directory can contain only directory names that conform to the 8.3-character DOS file naming convention. If any long directory names exist in the path, the installation program will not work.

  5. To extend the schema on the target tree, click Schema Extensions > follow the prompts.

If you have already extended the schema on the target tree, you need not extend it again because the ZfS 3.0.2 schema extensions only need to be done once for a tree.

  6. Click New Installation > click Policy-Enabled Server Management.

  7. Read the license agreement > click Accept if you agree with the terms of the Software License Agreement > click Next.

  8. To perform a new installation, click New Installation > click Next.

    or

To install from a saved installation configuration file, click Template Installation > enter or browse for and select the path and the filename > click Next.

  9. Select Remote Management.

  10. Deselect Create eDirectory Objects > click Next.

  11. In the Server Selection for Remote Management Services page, do the following:

    1. Click the Add Servers button > browse to the server objects and select them.

NOTE:  In the Add Servers dialog box, you can list the servers by their eDirectory tree names or by Microsoft* Domain names. If you select the servers from the Microsoft Domain, you will be prompted to authenticate to the server.

Make sure that the selected servers do not have the ZfD 3.x or earlier version components installed.

This populates the selected server names to the Server Name column in the Server Selection for Remote Management Services page.

    2. To install ZfS 3.0.2 Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins on the local machine, click the check box under ConsoleOne Snap-Ins column for Local Machine.

Local Machine refers to the Windows NT/2000 workstation or server you are using to perform the installation.

If the local machine is a Windows NT/2000 workstation, you can install only the ZfS 3.0.2 Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins.

If the local machine is a Windows NT/2000 server with or without eDirectory installed, you can install the ZfS 3.0.2 Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins and the Remote Management Agent.

    3. For any server where you installed ConsoleOne, click the ConsoleOne Snap-Ins check box.

To install the ConsoleOne snap-ins on all the servers, right-click anywhere in the ConsoleOne Snap-ins column and click Select All.

IMPORTANT:  ZfS does not support running from a server's console an instance of ConsoleOne installed on that NetWare server. To use the server's installation of ConsoleOne, you must map a drive from a workstation to that server and run ConsoleOne from the workstation.

    4. Click the check box under the Remote Management Agent column for the servers that you want to remotely manage.

To install the Remote Management Agent on all the servers, right-click anywhere in the Remote Management Agent column and click Select All.

    5. Click Next.

  12. In the Remote Management File Installation Path and Password Configuration page, do the following:

    1. Browse to add the path on the selected server where you want to install the Remote Management Agent.

This path could be the same per platform for all selected servers.

For a NetWare server, the Remote Management Agent is installed by default in the SYS:\SYSTEM directory. You can change the installation path for Windows servers only. To change the installation path on a Windows NT/2000 server, click Browse and select the desired directory.

IMPORTANT:  If you have installed a previous version of the ZENworks for Servers Remote Management, the installation path and the Password Configuration fields are greyed.

WARNING:  If you are installing ZfS 3.0.2 on a server where you have already installed ZfS 3 Remote Management, you must reboot the server before you start a Remote Management session. If you do not reboot the server, the Remote Management agent will crash.

    2. To assign the default password for the Remote Management Agent, select the Use Default Password check box.

The default password is novell. This password will be used for establishing a Remote Management session with the managed servers.

    3. If you do not want to use the default password, enter a password for the Remote Management Agent in the Password field.

This password will be used for establishing a Remote Management session with the managed servers. Use a password of ten or fewer alphanumeric characters. The password is case sensitive and cannot be blank.

    4. Click Next.

  13. To save the current installation configuration, click the Save the Following check box > enter a path and filename for the template file.

You can use this template file to install ZfS 3.0.2 Remote Management again.

  14. Click Finish to begin the installation process.

  15. After installation, review the installation log file that is displayed to ensure that all selected components have been successfully installed.

If you receive error messages during installation, see Installation Error Messages for more information.

  16. If necessary, rerun the installation program to install any components that failed to install.

  17. For the optimization drivers to be functional on Windows NT/2000 managed servers, restart the Windows NT/2000 managed servers.

  18. Click Exit to close the main installation program.

The Remote Management Agent will be automatically loaded when you restart the managed server. For more information on how to start a Remote Management session, see "Initiating Remote Management Sessions" in "Remote Management for Windows NT/2000 Servers" in "Remote Management" in the Administration guide.
