Novell NetWare Migration Wizard 6 April 2002 ************IMPORTANT************** There is an incompatibility between NW51sp2a NSS code and the more recent NW51sp3 or NetWare 6 NSS code which causes files to be migrated as zero-byte files. Upgrade to SP3 on all 5.1 servers before the migration if you are using NSS volumes. For additional information, see TID# 10064226 in the Novell Knowledgebase at http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp. ************************************ Table of Contents 1.0 Overview 1.1 What's New in This Version 2.0 General Issues 2.1 NWIP Support 2.2 Running Migration Wizard 6 on Windows 98 3.0 NetWare 3 Migrations 3.1 Establishing Server-to-Server Connections 3.2 Updating Macintosh and OS2 Name Space 3.3 SMDR Entry Not Found 4.0 NetWare 4, NetWare 5, and NetWare 6 Migrations 4.1 Migrating Print Queues 4.2 Migrating Volumes 4.3 Changing IP Addresses 4.4 Timesync Information 4.5 Restoring Trustees 5.0 NT 3.51/4 Migrations 5.1 Running Novell NetWare Migration Wizard 6 5.2 Using a Template to Migrate Users 6.0 Legal Information 6.1 Disclaimer, Export Notice, Copyright, and Patents 6.2 Trademarks 1.0 Overview These notes describe some known issues that have not been resolved for this release of the NetWare Migration Wizard 6 software. If you want to send us feedback, send an e-mail to NETMIGRATION_FEEDBACK@NOVELL.COM with a detailed description of the issue. 1.1 What's New in This Version This version fixes two problems: 1) After migrating to NetWare 6 using NSS volumes, your client connections would be very slow or would timeout. This was due to invalid user IDs remaining from the temporary tree. See TID 2961749 for more information. 2) Configuring SLP should not be required in order to migrate to NetWare 6. 2.0 General Issues 2.1 NWIP Support NWIP is not supported. You must unload this before migrating. 2.2 Running Migration Wizard 6 on Windows 98 We recommend that you run Migration Wizard 6 on Windows NT, 2000, or XP workstations. However, if you only have Windows 98 workstations, you will need to set the following options before running the Migration Wizard: 1) Right-click the red N on the workstation taskbar and then click Novell Client Properties. 2) Click the Advanced Settings tab. 3) Click File Cache Level, write down the current value, and select 0 as the new value. 5) Click Cache Writes and select Off as the value. 6) Reboot the workstation for the changes to take effect. When the migration completes, you can reset these options to their previous values. If you don't set these values before running the Migration Wizard, you might see the following error message at the end of the fourth step of the migration: "An error occurred attempting to fixup the invalid GUID's in the NSS file system. Check TID2961749 for information on fixing this problem. Server: someServer User: .admin.somecontext.sometree. Other Info: SYS 6EBC6E00-4283-11D6-86-8F-0090273C99B6 " If you see this error, you can set the values referenced in the message, reboot the workstation, and rerun the fourth step of the migration. 3.0 NetWare 3 Migrations 3.1 Establishing Server-to-Server Connections Make sure that you log in to the destination NDS/eDirectory tree and the NetWare 3 server as a user that exists in the NDS bindery context. Otherwise, you will get an SMDR error and will not be able to establish a server-to-server connection. 3.2 Updating Machintosh OS2 Name Space If you have a MAC.NAM or OS2.NAM name space version that is older than July 1996 running on a NetWare 3.x or 4.10 source server, you must update the name space version on the NetWare source server before you can migrate Macintosh or OS/2 files using the Migration Wizard. Software is available at http://support.novell.com/filefinder. Search for the following patches by entering the name of the file into the Search field: NetWare 4.10 > NAM41D.EXE (Macintosh and OS/2 Name Space) NetWare 3.12 > NAM312.EXE (Name Space Update for NetWare 3.12) 3.3 SMDR Entry Not Found If you get the error message "Error opening connection to SMDR" and it references error code XFFFDFFDB after verification, make sure that the source server name is in the SLP table of the destination server by entering DISPLAY SLP SERVICES at the NetWare 6 server console. Make sure that TSA312.NLM and SMDR.NLM are loaded on both servers. 4.0 NetWare 4, NetWare 5, or NetWare 6 Migrations 4.1 Migrating Print Queues If you are upgrading from NDS 6/7 to NDS 8/Novell eDirectory, you will lose your bindery print queues. If you are using a network print device, such as a Jet Direct card, the network print device will not attach to the queues after the migration and you will have to reconfigure your queues. 4.2 Migrating Volumes When migrating volumes from NetWare 5 to NetWare 6, you might see one of these errors: 'NWSMTS error: Unable to open a data stream.' (Path: ':') Error: 'fffdffcd' Function: 'NWSMTSOpenDataSetForBackup') 'NWSMTS error: An invalid path was used.' (Path: ':') Error: 'fffdffdc' Function: 'NWSMTSWriteDataSet') To correct the problem, download Support Pack 3 for NetWare 5.1 and copy TSA500.NLM from the Support Pack to the source server. 4.3 Changing IP Addresses If you intend to change the IP address of your destination server to match the IP address of the source server, you must edit the AUTOEXEC.NCF and SYS:ETC/HOSTS files. You can modify AUTOEXEC.NCF using the Migration Wizard by clicking the Edit Configuration Files button. You must manually change the IP address in the SYS:ETC\HOSTS file. Look for the original name of the destination server and change the IP address. 4.4 Timesync Information During the migration, the source server Timesync information is not automatically migrated. 4.5 Restoring Trustees Trustees might not be fully restored the first time the "Finish NDS Migration" step is run because NSS volumes depend on the NDS Backlink process to create ID information on objects before trustees can be associated with those objects. This is a temporary condition that can be addressed by verifying that the Backlink process is complete for all user and group objects before running the "Finish NDS Migration" step. If you have already run the "Finish NDS Migration" step, you can complete the Backlink process and rerun the "Finish NDS Migration" step. Reboot the server after the step completes. To manually run the Backlink process, enter the following commands at the server console: set dstrace=on set dstrace=+blink set dstrace=*b If you switch to the Directory Services screen on the server, you will see the objects being processed. The above commands will need to be repeated until no more User or Group objects appear in the backlinked list on the Directory Services screen. 5.0 NT 3.51/4 Migrations 5.1 Running Novell NetWare Migration Wizard 6 You must run the Migration Wizard application from a Windows NT 4 workstation or server or from a Windows 2000 workstation. 5.2 Using a Template to Migrate Users If you are using a template to migrate your NT users to NDS/ eDirectory and if there are any conflicts between the Template object properties and the user's NT properties, the Template object properties will always overwrite the NT properties--with the exception of the NT user's last name, full name, and description. 6.0 Legal Information 6.1 Disclaimer, Export Notice, Copyright, and Patents Novell, Inc. makes no representations or warranties with respect to the contents or use of this documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose.
