User accounts can originate from four potential sources depending on the authentication options you are using:
The Appliance: You can create and manage appliance-specific users on the appliance. Local users can access data on the appliance using all available protocols.

Remote LDAP Server at Central Office: see "Configuring the LDAP-enabled eDirectory Tree at the Central Office" in the Novell Nterprise Branch Office Setup Guide.
A Windows NT Domain: If you have configured and enabled NT Domain authentication, you can import Domain users as shadow users on the appliance. Users can then access the appliance data directories and files using the CIFS, HTTP, and FTP protocols.

UNIX (NIS): If you have configured and enabled NIS authentication, users can access appliance data directories and files using HTTP or FTP.

To give users access to the data on the appliance, you must have created users on the appliance or have configured the appliance to authenticate users through Windows NT, NIS, or an existing LDAP tree. For more information, see Managing Volumes, Folders, and Files .
