Accessing a Service as a User or Member of a Group

When a user attempts to access a remote file system using the NFS Server, the local NFS client sends the user's request to the remote server where the file resides. The server checks whether the user has the necessary permissions and is recognized as one the following:

• The owner of the file
• A member of the file owner's group
• Any user able to log in to the server

To identify those NetWare users and groups on the system without a recognized account, the server maps these accounts to nobody (UID -2) and nogroup (GID -2). This allows the NFS server to identify nonmapped usernames and set special restrictions.
