AppleTalk for WAN Connections

AppleTalk supports the following WAN connections:

Unnumbered point-to-point links are supported for both on-demand and permanent WAN links to a remote peer. We recommend selecting this type of WAN connection. On-demand unnumbered point-to-point links are supported over ATM, PPP, PPP/ISDN, and X.25 links.

Numbered point-to-point links are supported for permanent WAN links running over NetWare Link/PPPTM software and PPP/ISDN software. PPP/ISDN software allows a numbered point-to-point link to support only one connection to a remote peer.

Multiaccess links are supported for permanent WAN links running over ATM, frame relay, and NetWare Link/X.25TM software. Multiaccess links support multiple connections to remote peers and are modeled as a LAN.

Numbered point-to-point and multiaccess links are offered only to allow interoperability with vendors that do not offer unnumbered point-to-point mode.

WAN Network Support

AppleTalk permits WAN connections over the following protocols:

Connecting to Other WAN Vendors

AppleTalk enables you to configure all the previously listed WAN media types to connect with other vendors, such as the following:

In addition, the software allows a WAN connection with a vendor not compatible with any of the network types listed previously. You can specify to the media the protocol identifier of a WAN vendor along with a network type that it supports.
