Novell Linux Desktop Installation Instructions

Choose from the following options:

Installing Novell Linux Desktop 9 with SP2

  1. Insert Novell Linux Desktop 9 SP2 CD 1, boot your machine, then select Installation to boot the SP kernel from CD.

The kernel loads and the following message appears:

“Make sure that CD number 1 is in your drive.”

  2. Insert the original Novell Linux Desktop 9 CD 1, then click OK to run the regular installation.
  3. Accept the license agreement, then select a language, default desktop, and other installation settings.
  4. Click Yes, Install to start the installation.
  5. Insert Novell Linux Desktop 9 SP2 CD 1 when prompted, followed by Novell Linux Desktop 9 SP2 CD 2 (and 3 if you are installing the x86 version).
  6. When prompted, insert the original Novell Linux Desktop 9 CD 1 again, followed by the original Novell Linux Desktop 9 CD 2 and 3.
  7. Continue as usual with the installation (entering a password for root, network configuration, testing your internet connection, activating the ZENworks® Online Update Service, user authentication method, and user name and password).

Tip: If you get an error message during the media installation indicating that a certain file couldn't be installed, skip that file and continue to the end. Then run the update again. During the reinstall, only the skipped packages will be installed.

Updating Novell Linux Desktop 9 Using the SP2 CDs

You will need access to the original Novell Linux Desktop 9 CDs in order to complete the installation.

  1. Insert the Novell Linux Desktop SP2 CD 1 in your CD drive, then click Yes when the hardware detection notice appears.

Note: If the CD isn’t autodetected, try reinserting it. If autodetect continues to fail, select System > Administrator Settings > Software > Patch CD Update.

  2. If you are not logged in as root, enter the root password when prompted.

The YaST Online Update dialog appears.

  3. Click Next to begin the update process.

The Download and Installation log will track update progress.

  4. When prompted for the YOU Patch CD CD2, insert Novell Linux Desktop SP2 CD2, then click OK. If you are installing the x86 version, you will also be prompted to insert Novell Linux Desktop SP2 CD3.

  5. Click Finish when you see "Installation Finished" near the end of the progress log .
  6. If you skipped patches, repeat this update process.

Installing the VMWare Workstation 5 Virtual Machine of Novell Linux Desktop

Downloaded nld9-vmwarews5-vm.zip.

After you have downloaded the VMWare Workstation 5 Virtual Machine of Novell Linux Desktop 9, unzip the file (nld9-vmwarews5-vm.zip) to the folder on your Linux or Windows system where you keep your Virtual Machines. By default, this is "home/vmware" on Linux and "My Documents\My Virtual Machines" on Windows. When unzipping the file, make sure that you recreate the folders contained in the ZIP file.

After the file has been unzipped, start VMWare Workstation 5, open the Virtual Machine, then power it on. At this point, you will receive a message asking you whether you want to create a new identifier or keep the existing identifier. We strongly recommend that you keep the existing identifier. If you don't, you will need to reconfigure the network card within the Virtual Machine.

NOTE: In some circumstances the XWindows system will fail to initialize correctly within the Virtual Machine. If this happens you will see a text based console repeated four times on the screen. To fix this you will need to perform the following steps:

  1. Login as root (the password is novell in lower case).
  2. Change to runlevel 3 by typing init 3, then enter.
  3. Reset the XServer by typing sax2 -r, then enter.
  4. When the configuration screen prompts you to accept the configuration or change it, press OK to Accept.
  5. In the text based console Start the XWindows system by typing init 5, then enter or restart the system by typing init 6, then return.

For more information on VMWare Workstation 5, see the VMWare Web site.
