1.0 Product Overview

GroupWise® Messenger 1.0 for Linux is Messenger 1.0 Support Pack 1 running on Linux*. It includes all the standard Messenger components, plus a new client:

2.0 Installation Instructions

  1. For ease of installation, make sure that ConsoleOne is installed on the Linux server where you want to install Messenger.

    ConsoleOne is located in /usr/ConsoleOne/bin.

  2. At the Linux server, become root by entering su and the root password.

  3. Change to the /server directory on the Novell GroupWise Messenger for Linux CD.

  4. Enter the following command:

    ./install.sh

  5. Press Enter to continue.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

When you start the Messenger agents on Linux, they run as daemons in the background. You can use the Messenger agent Web consoles to view agent status information from your Web browser.

For more information, see the Messenger 1.0 Installation Guide to determine the system requirements for Messenger 1.0 for Linux, create your Messenger system on Linux, install the Linux Messenger agents, and install the Messenger Cross-Platform client on Linux and Macintosh.

The Messenger 1.0 Installation Guide (MessengerInstallationGuide.pdf) is located in the /server/docs/en subdirectory of the CD. For experienced Messenger users, a Quick Start (MessengerQuickStart.pdf) is also provided.

When you view the Messenger 1.0 Installation Guide or Messenger Quick Start, you might initially see the Adobe* Acrobat* License Agreement. Close the License Agreement window to view the Messenger documentation.

For information about the latest GroupWise Messenger for Linux issues, see TID 10092069 at the Novell Support Web site .

3.0 Known Issues

3.1 Administration Issues

3.1.1 NFS Not Supported

Because of long-standing file lock issues with NFS, you cannot use an NFS mount to mount a server file system where your Messenger system is located to a workstation where you are running ConsoleOne. We recommend using an SMB mount instead.

3.1.2 SSL Connection Required

The Messenger Cross-Platform client requires an SSL connection with the Messenger agents. If the Messenger agents are not configured for SSL, Messenger client users receive an 8922 error.

Use ConsoleOne to configure the Messenger agents for SSL. Provide an SSL certificate, key file, and password on the Security page of the Messenger Server object. For more information, see Configuring the Messenger Agents for SSL in Setting Up a Messenger System on Linux in the Messenger 1.0 Installation Guide.

3.1.3 Problem Using a Hostname Instead of an IP Address

On the Identification page of the Messenger Server object or a Messenger Agent object in ConsoleOne, if you specify a hostname and select Bind to This Address, the Messenger agents cannot start. To avoid this problem, specify an IP address or deselect Bind to This Address on the Server and Agent objects.

3.2 Client Issues

3.2.1 Compatibility with Other Instant Messaging Systems

If you use Cerulean Trillian Pro to communicate between instant messaging systems, a GroupWise Messenger plug-in is available at the following URL:

http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/downloads/downloads.php?d_type=plugins&componentID=163

An open source instant messaging connector called Gaim is available at the following URL:

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/downloads.php

3.3 Documentation Issues

3.3.1 Localized Installation Guides Not Immediately Available

The localized versions of the GroupWise Messenger for Linux Installation Guide are not included on the GroupWise for Linux media. Installation Guides in French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish will be available soon at the GroupWise 6.5 Documentation Web site.

3.3.2 Web Link in ConsoleOne Help

The link from the ConsoleOne help to the Novell GroupWise documentation Web site does not work. This problem will be addressed in a future version of ConsoleOne. In the meantime, you can copy the URL from the ConsoleOne help topic into your browser window in order to access the GroupWise documentation Web site.
