Secure printing takes advantage of SSL, which requires users to authenticate using their eDirectory usernames and passwords. Users authenticate once per eDirectory tree per session. The print data is encrypted from the client to the server, and all print communication uses port 443. The print data is not encrypted between the server and the printer. Without secure printing, the printer is available to anyone inside the firewall on the network and the print data is not encrypted.
Consider the following when making changes to SSL:
Enabling SSL Changes the Printer URL: When you check the Requires Security check box, the URL for the associated printer will change. Users who have already installed this printer must delete and reinstall the printer in order to use the updated URL.
Enabling SSL Uses LDAP for Authentication: When you enable SSL, iPrint uses LDAP to authenticate users. When a user authenticates, LDAP begins searching for the user beginning at the root of the eDirectory tree by default. If this search method becomes an issue, you might want to change the starting point for the search to a container closer to the users. The starting point for the search can be changed by editing /etc/opt/novell/iprint/httpd/conf/ipp.conf and changing the value for the AuthLDAPURL parameter. See Apache's AuthLDAPURL Directive for more information.
In Novell iManager, click iPrint > Manage Printer.
Browse to and select the Printer object you want to modify.
Click Client Support > IPP Support.
Check the Requires Security check box.
Click Apply or OK to update the printer settings.
When users print to a secure printer, they are prompted for the eDirectory username and password. Users can select to have their workstations remember their password for printing. For Windows NT/2000/XP users, passwords are saved on a per-user basis. See Managing Passwords for more information.
