Installing the Novell Client on User Workstations

If you plan to install Novell Client software on a small number of workstations, or if the workstations are not yet connected to a network, install from the Novell Client Software CD.

To install Novell Client on a workstation, the logged-in user must be an administrator on the workstation. Users without administrator rights to the workstation cannot install new software.

In this version of Novell Client, NICI Client 2.6 and NMASTM Client 2.2 (NDS® method only) are installed by default on Windows NT/XP/2000. If they are already installed, they are updated automatically. You can control both the installation and use of NMAS by installing the Novell Client using a platform-specific unattend file. If you uncheck the Install NICI and NMAS check box on the Installation > Setup page, NICI and NMAS will not be installed. If you uncheck the NMAS Authentication check box on the Client > Advanced Login page, Novell Client will not use NMAS during authentication even if the component is installed. If the component is not installed and this box is checked, Novell Client login skips the NMAS authentication and authentication continues.

In Windows 95/98, you must install NICI and NMAS after you have completed the Novell Client installation in order to use the new password methods. You must restart your workstation before installing NICI and NMAS. If you already have NICI and NMAS installed, they are not updated during the Novell Client install on Windows 95/98 but you do not need to update them in order to work with the new login methods.

The Novell Client Setup utility installs Novell Client software on workstations running Windows. This utility lets you select the client that you want to install from a list of available clients. Administrative options are also available.

HINT:  The Typical Install option installs only the basic Novell Client components. If you want to install additional services such as NDPS®, use the Custom Installation option. If you are upgrading Novell Client software, the same custom components are installed unless you choose different ones.

ZENworks® for Desktops Remote Management requires that you install Workstation Manager components during the Novell Client installation.

To install Novell Client software on a workstation:

  1. Insert the Novell Client Software CD.

If the Novell Client Setup utility does not automatically launch, run winsetup.exe from the root of the CD.

There are several customized parameters that you can use during the installation by running the installation from the command line. These include special accessibility settings, status logging, automatic client upgrade, and others.

  2. Click the software you want to install.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

For more specific instructions, including the steps necessary to configure the Novell Client or to install the Novell Client to multiple workstations, see the Novell Client online documentation.
