Supporting Desktop Application Users

For a Novell^® ZENworks^® OnDemand Services^TM user to run desktop applications (Novell ZENworks for Desktops applications), the user must:

Have the Novell Client^TM installed on his or her computer. The Novell Client can be downloaded from the Novell Downloads site.

Install the Web browser plug-in that supports launching of desktop applications from the OnDemand Services Launch Item gadget. OnDemand Services automatically installs the plug-in, called nalexec.cab, the first time the user launches a desktop application. After the plug-in is installed, it uses Novell Application Launcher^TM to launch the application. If Application Launcher does not reside on the user's workstation, the plug-in attempts to install it from the ZENworks server defined in the Launch Item gadget's configuration settings (see Launch Item Gadget (OD_LaunchItemGadget) ). If the plug-in installs Application Launcher, users might be prompted to restart the computer. They should do this before launching an application.
On Windows NT/2000/XP, the user must be logged in as a member of the Administrators group for OnDemand Services to be able to install the plug-in (and Application Launcher if necessary). Logging in as an Administrator is only required the first time; users can log in through a non-Administrator Windows account after the plug-in has been successfully installed.

On Windows 98, if the ZENworks server from which the plug-in will install Application Launcher is a Windows 2000 server, the Windows 98 user must have a user account on the Windows 2000 server. Otherwise, the plug-in will not be able to install the Application Launcher files.
