Whenever users delete files from the server, the files are retained and can be recovered (salvaged) until they have been purged.
IMPORTANT:Files that have been purged can no longer be restored from salvage.
Deleted files are purged from the volume when one of the following events occurs:
The Purge Delay setting times out. Deleted files are purged automatically.
The server starts purging files if a volume starts to fill up; the oldest files that have been deleted are automatically purged.
If you do not want a files on NSS volumes to be salvagable after deletion, you can enable the Immediate Purge of Deleted Files parameter. Whenever a file is deleted, it is purged immediately. For information, see Section 19.1, Configuring the Server-Level Parameter for Salvage.
You manually purge the deleted files.
Use any of the following methods to salvage or purge deleted files.
Using NetStorage, the Admin user, the Admin-equivalent user, and individual users can purge and possibly undelete NSS files that were previously deleted on your Linux or NetWare server.
Access NetStorage.
For information, see Section 3.4, Novell NetStorage.
In the left column, select the directory where the deleted files were.
Click , then click .
Select the check box next to one or more files you want to undelete or purge.
Click , then click or click .
Using the Novell Client™ for Windows 2000/XP/2003, Admin users, Admin-equivalent users, and individual users can purge and possibly undelete NSS files that were previously deleted on your Linux or NetWare server.
Right-click the Novell Client icon (the red ) in the notification area to display the menu.
Use the NetWare utility even if the NSS volume resided on a Linux server.
If you want to salvage a deleted file, click , browse to locate the directory where the deleted file resided, then do one of the following:
To restore one or more deleted files, select the deleted files, then click .
To restore all deleted files in the directory, click .
When you are done, click .
If you want to purge a deleted file, click , browse to locate the directory where the deleted file resided, then do one of the following:
To purge one or more deleted files, select the deleted files, then click .
To purge all deleted files in the directory, click .
To purge the directory’s subdirectories and all deleted files in them, click .
When you are done, click .
Using Novell Remote Manager for NetWare, the Admin user or equivalent user can purge and possibly undelete NSS files that were previously deleted on your NetWare server.
In a Web browser, connect to Novell Remote Manager on the NetWare server where the deleted file resides.

On the page, click the volume name link of the volume where the file was deleted
From the list, click the icon to left of the directory name where the file was deleted.
On the page, find the s field, then click the link.
Do one of the following:
Salvage: Locate the deleted file you want to restore, then click the Salvage button next to the filename.
Purge: Locate the deleted file you want to purge, then click the button next to the filename.
Purge All: Click the button to purge all the files in the directory.
