5.2 Upgrading the Media Format for NSS Volumes on NetWare

Before you upgrade an NSS volume to use the new metadata structure, make sure you understand the Section 5.1, Guidelines for Upgrading the Media Format of NSS Volumes on NetWare. This section describes how to upgrade to your NSS volume to use the new metadata structure available for NSS volumes on OES SP1 NetWare and later or on NetWare 6.5 SP4 and later.

5.2.1 Upgrading the Structure for Currently Active NSS Volumes

The following commands perform the one-time upgrade for currently active volumes and are permissible only when used at the server console. The process runs in the background. The elapsed time for the upgrade process varies according to the number of storage objects in the volume; the more objects a volume contains, the longer it takes. Volumes with a large number of objects can take a substantial time to upgrade. You cannot enable the Hard Links attribute for the volume until the media upgrade is complete. A message is sent to the logger screen when the process is successfully completed.

Syntax

Command and Description

nss /ZLSSUpgradeCurrentVolumeMediaFormat=volumename

Upgrades the specified active volume. If it is a shared volume, the clustering system vetoes the upgrade until all nodes in the cluster are running a supported operating system.

nss /ZLSSUpgradeCurrentVolumeMediaFormat=all

Upgrades all currently active volumes. If a shared volume is encountered, the clustering system vetoes the upgrade until all nodes in the cluster are running a supported operating system.

nss /ZLSSUpgradeCurrentVolumeMediaFormat=all /include=shared

Upgrades all currently active volumes that are part of a shared pool, but only if the clustering system permits it.

nss /ZLSSUpgradeCurrentVolumeMediaFormat=all /include=local

Upgrades all currently active volumes that are not part of a shared pool.

5.2.2 Upgrading the Structure for New NSS Pools and Volumes

The following commands determine the media version type for new pools and volumes. Make sure to use the commands on the NetWare servers where you plan to use hard links. Issue the command from the server console or from the nssstart.cfg file. If the command is issued from the command line, it persists until a server reboot. If the command is placed in the nssstart.cfg file, it persists across server reboots.

Syntax

Command and Description

nss /ZLSSUpgradeNewVolumeMediaFormat

Creates all new NSS volumes with the upgraded structure. This applies to volumes on both local and shared pools.

nss /ZLSSUpgradeNewVolumeMediaFormat /include=shared

Creates all new NSS volumes with the upgraded structure if the new volume is on a shared pool. However, the clustering system vetoes the upgrade until all nodes in the cluster are running a supported operating system.

nss /ZLSSUpgradeNewVolumeMediaFormat /include=local

Creates all new NSS volumes with the upgraded structure if the new volume is not on a shared pool.
